Anyone see the tuning module for the X5 50e that Bluespark Automotive came out with? See link below and theres also a dyno video.

Shows it adds ~114hp and ~98tq to the ground. Those are some impressive numbers.

Anyone running this or something similar and could share their thoughts?

several have this on their 45e with favorable results. didn’t go crazy with it, just the first stage was enough to satisfy, and no reports of engine warranty issues

I emailed the team over at Blue Spark Automotive with some of my questions and figured i would share their responses along with a link to their installation guide for the B58 engine.

Q: Does this tuning module just plug into the OBD port? Do you leave it plugged in? How long does it take to upload the tune and/or to remove the tune from the car?
A: Our 3 channel tuning box connects to the MAP, CAM, and Boost sensor. Quick and easy installation, see link below. Our plug and play device remaps the engine using live signals. Once plugged in, the performance will be instant. If the tuning box was unplugged, the engine will go back to a stock engine.

Q: What are the differences between the “5 user selectable maps”? What is “start-stop compatible” and “auto compatible”?
A: Changing settings allows you to select from five distinctly different maps. Map A is biased more towards mild gains in the lower part of the rev range. Map E is biased towards all out performance. Maps B, C and D are a progression between the two. Settings can be changed manually by moving the red jumper on the pins, or our Bluetooth app will allow you to select from our app via a smartphone.

Q: It mentions using 99 RON fuel, is that just premium fuel 91/93 octane in the USA or best octane rating fuel available?
A: We do advise using the best octane fuel available, as you will see better results from this.

Q: Also is the device truly traceless once removed? I’ve read on the forums that similar products the adjustments will be kept in the history but its more of whether someone looks for it or not is the question.
A: Yes, so once the unit has been unplugged the engine goes back to a stock engine, and no traces can be detected. If your car is under warranty, please remove the unit and harnesses before a service. When the unit has been unplugged, nothing will be detected in the ECU history, as our units run off live signals.

Q: The instruction sheet also mentions once the tuning module is installed to leave it on standard setting/map A for 200 miles before adjusting or switching maps. Is this required every time if you were to remove the tuning module from the car and putting it back on?
A: With all our units, we do suggest running the default setting for the first 200 miles, as this allows your engine to adjust to the changes. You won't need to run 200 miles on the default setting every time the unit has been unplugged.

Any updates about 50e performance with this tuner? Is Bluespark just UK oriented?

So I’ve been in touch with these guys and decided to give them a try. I’ll have couple thousand miles by the time I install the module. Will keep this thread updated

Awesome, I'm looking forward to hearing how it is!

I just ended up grabbing a JB4 for the gen 3 B58 off another member here on the forum. I'll let you know how it goes likely sometime next week when I have the time to install it.

The module is installed and test drive in map c was uneventful. Made a couple 0-60 runs and was at 4.01 and 3.96 but without the module did 10 runs with an average of 4.35 with my 2 best runs equaling the Bluespark runs. Obviously need more data and will update as appropriate. One area I can tell a difference is when in battery hold there is a torqueier feel at low rpm. There is no question aabout that.
Also I have tried on all runs to make similar all the variables like temp, stretch of road wind and so on

Awesome, thank you for the update! I posted a thread over on the general forum, but did you just disconnect the negative terminal on 12v battery under the trunk for the install? I have my JB4 in-hand and just want to make sure I properly depower the 12v system before I start disconnecting sensors.

I did not however I kept my phone and key away from vehicle for 10 minutes and made sure the hood was opened prior to the 10 minute period so I didn’t wake up the idrive to get to the hood release. No issues at all.
Let us know your results!

So went out again today for 3 more runs and adjusted tuner to Map D 7. Holy cow what a difference. I logged 3.25 3.46 and 3.96. The butt dyno is unmistakable. Scary quick this car is tuned. For the record I realize my 50e isn’t a 3.25 car as I use this app to judge differences in performance over stock. I will run a few more times but so far the average improvement looks to be .50 seconds quicker. There’s no question it’s quicker. What I might do next is try drained battery and place in battery hold and see what mostly ICE can do stock vs tune. Probably be easier on the tranny and the joints that way.

Awesome! I'm glad to hear man!

I'm hoping to get my JB4 installed this week and will try to give an update by the weekend.

So today went out on several 0-60s since I don’t have a dyno close by. Runs were very tight at 3.59, 3.66, 3.59 and 3.60 using OBD Link timer. Used Fastr app and got 3.46 and 3.59. All with the BS module in Map D 7.
I plan on getting more data at stock but so far with just the Fastr app I was at 4.10, 4.56, 3.96 and 4.25 were the lowest. 5.25 twice with depleted battery. Pretty excited with the real world performance gains. Maybe.50 seconds quicker car with the BS installed so not sure what that translates to in HP/TQ but have to think approximately 75/50 range at least.
Car is very smooth running in both sport and hybrid

Finally was able to install the JB4 this past weekend. As expected, the car is an absolute monster! I have a Dragy laying around somewhere from years ago and if I can find it I will try to do a couple of runs. Either way, the butt-dyno is very happy!
11-04-2024
I’m using a Dragy from my neighbor tomorrow and will do a couple runs to compare. I really don’t trust these phone apps for accuracy. I will update

I'm curious.....not judging......but if my car runs 0--60 half a second faster, what's the big deal??

If you follow the same logic, why did you get the M60i vs. the M40i? To each their own, but for some of us it's as simple as "because we can".

On a separate note, I personally notice the increased power more in the 30-80mph which is nice for pulling onto the freeway etc.

Perhaps a Lexus RX will be your next car selection. Less dynamic but at least you get the .50 second slower vehicle
11-06-2024
Then there’s that guy that said “wow wish my car was .50 seconds slower” never
11-06-2024
I was able to collect a little more data today and by the way this quest I am on is to determine if my 575.00 investment in tuning boxes lines up with performance gains thru timed runs. The Dragy is much more consistent than the free phone based apps. Those apps tend to over shoot or under shoot the time by half second and are all over the place.
The Dragy timed me at 4.18, 4.21 and 4.28 using Map D 8 and using factory mapping it was somewhat consistent at 4.64, 4.52 and 5.0. So with that I conclude there is probably at least .45 improvement in power maybe slightly more by upping the tune to map E 9. This car is noticeably quicker but probably not in the M60 territory. Not sure why BMW detuned our B58s but whatever. I’m happy with what this tune has achieved and I’ll just leave it there. The Bluespark folks have been excellent with customer care issues and are legit.

Additionally, my best 1 ft roll out times were all under 4 seconds. 3.95, 3.89 and 3.79 as I was not sure what metric the folks on this forum use. Its 70 degrees here in Alabama with slight wind but after cool downs I went in both directions to counter any wind or slope advantage. I have the summer 741s 21”
