I wish I had the time and resources to do this with my 2000 E39 back in the day.
Detailers Domain wroteI came here to ask this. Sad to hear it doesnt sound that great. Thats the problem with all of those headunits. Are you planning to run a DSP or something to make it better?I would agree...
update loving the new head unit, as it's an updated version with car play and bluetooth that looks oem, however that being said the sound isn't that great, I'm in the process of getting a 12 volt installer to adjust some of the unit to get better sound out of the system.
lonestar22 wroteTrying to work it out. Yup the AVIN head units are great but not great for sound. It's the weakest link to the system. I will probably toggle back and forth from DSPI came here to ask this. Sad to hear it doesnt sound that great. Thats the problem with all of those headunits. Thank you!
The proposed updates and upgrades to get the sound right
1. Helix V.12.DSP
2. Helix Conductor
3. Helix hec hd-audio usb interface ( if you want to have direct connection for better quality)
4. Helix iK S10 ( DVC2)
Mrbyers1 wrotethanks! I always intend on these to be forever cars and you know I think once they are done I'm on to the next project. The last thing I can think of for this one will be a full body repaint.Amazing build. I have an e39 and this generation is pure BMW. Keep up the great work. 1 question is this your forever car?
Detailers Domain wroteWill you still be able to change songs through the headunit or strictly through your phone?Great news I was able to get in to a great 12 volt specialist and we will be getting the audio sorted out.

Detailers Domain wroteHow is the Avin unit holding up? I am pretty set on replacing my current Obvious aftermarket Pioneer infotainment system (installed by previous owner) with this OEM+ Avin unit. Summer project for my E38 for suresome audio upgrades....
Swapped out the OEM head unit for an updated AVIN with Apple Car Play...loved it for the look and fitment.........
That is one HELL of a restoration of the E38
Also I noticed you guys are up in Jersey! I live down in Maryland, might need to make a drive to you guys for some resto stuff in the near future. Would love to do some leather restoration to my interior.
jkeithw wrotefor this car I used Mc Coy's Upholstery.Do you mind sharing who did the seat upholstery? I want someone to do the same with my Sport Countour seats.

philgunner02 wroteAfter the audio refresh I will do a respray at least that is on the list. Probably the next thing but I'll have to recover from the audio first.. I'm thinking 12 months. As long as I have a garage for it.From 0, next step will be a full respray.

MarcoF90 wroteI'm in the process of fixing everything the first installer did, making some major upgrades. The avin in concept is great, it fits and it looks oem. Tons of glitches and the worst part is the continuous ghost volume (it randomly blasts the volume to max). the head unit freezes and it needs a reboot etc.How is the Avin unit holding up? I am pretty set on replacing my current Obvious aftermarket Pioneer infotainment system (installed by previous owner) with this OEM+ Avin unit. Summer project for my E38 for sure

That being said it's gonna be hard to find something that looks oem like that.
Hope that helps.
