Hi all,

Frustrated. Jack the car up (rear ramps and front jacks) remove the panel to the transmission. I realize it's impossible to get a ratchet wrench to open the 8mm fill plug for the transmission.

Does anyone have any idea on how to gain better access to the transmission plug? It looks like it's blocked by the subframe. My only solution would be to find a stubby allen key, but then I wouldn't be able to torque the plug to spec.

Do you have a photo? What transmission 8 mm fill plug?

Cut an Allen key, stick in hole and turn it with a box wrench

Use 3/8" drive allen key, turn with open end wrench

This is how I do it as well on both my cars. Used an angle grinder to cut an 8mm allen to size, insert into fill plug, then slide the 8mm box wrench over it.

Otherwise you need to buy the tool from BMW. No other good solutions.

I'm going to give this another go soon. I'm planning on dropping the transfer case brace which I'm hoping will drop the transmission just enough so I can access the fill plug.

I would ideally like to cut an allen key, but I don't have an angle grider, just a dremel which I'm assuming would struggle to cut hardened steel.

I managed to do it. I simply removed the transmission cross brace, which dropped the transmission enough so I could get an 8mm allen key to fit.

Wasn't able to figure out a way to get a torque wrench up there. So I just yanked it as tight as I could.

It was a pain to get the fill plug back in with the oil dripping as the car was running. Everything was covered in oil including the plug so I kept dropping the plug, but finally managed to get it in there.

And now you’ll never forget what gear oil smells like haha!

It can be a mess, don’t get it in your hair or else it’ll take weeks for that smell to go away! Learned that the hard way a long time ago.

Yep quite the experience. I didn't realize you have to keep the car running while doing the torque converter fill. So I ended up losing a ton of oil and had to refill things.
Lessons learned! In any case, if I had a lift it would have been a lot more pleasant. My body and neck was sore for 2 days because of it ahahha. I need to get a yoga mat to work under the car.

How long is the size, may I ask ?

Looks like he cut his to just shy of 1". I don't think it has to be precise - the idea is to have just enough length to get the hex key to seat in the drain plug and get the box wrench on it, but not so much that it doesn't fit in the tight clearance. I think 1" sounds about right.

I used an 8mm hex socket and 8mm box wrench, with the wrench inside the ratchet end of the socket. My box wrench was too short so I had a hard time getting enough leverage, but it eventually worked. Getting the fill plug back in is a pain with everything oily, so I think the "right" cheap approach would be the ground hex key / hex socket + a longish 8mm ratcheting box wrench.

I think the only real way to get an official torque on the fill plug is to use the official BMW tool, which works as an extension to your torque wrench (so you have to do the lever arm conversion to get the proper torque target). I keep looking for the official tool (2 405 614), but it runs >$100 with shipping, so not really worth it for those of us that do this only once a few years. Hope this helps.

Glad to hear you persisted and accomplished your goal. Thanks for sharing.
