I will throw my hat into the ring and disagree with handling the trade up front. In my opinion it is the easiest, cleanest and most advantageous to not consider the trade-in until after the negotiations on the discount have been completed. There is no advantage to the consumer doing it the opposite way other than if they don't want to deal with a dealer offering lower than the trade amount they think they deserve however looking at the total price is really the important thing when comparing deals.

I will not discuss a trade with the dealer until I have a firm offer from Carvana and CarMax. And I will wait until the X5 is ready to be delivered within a few days to get the quote, because Carvana will lower their offer if you wait too long.

Always smart to get a couple offers on your trade-in from multiple dealers, that way you have some numbers in your back pocket if needed.
