Soo, I read the post on here about how you can do this swap with the right tools and taking off the shields and such, but not the bumper. Well let me tell you after doing this install. THIS IS NOT POSSIBLE. I don't care how small your hands are, or what special tools you have. I have been working on BMW's for 20 years and you're not getting these out without the bumper off.

I got all these parts off before I realized that this just wasn't happening.

IMG-3344.jpg

So I found a trust image of the bumper and how it all goes together HERE. and I then went ahead with the mission.

Let me show you the first problem, looking at the back of the bumper. The exhaust trim is held in by 3 8mm bolts and a clip. Circled in red, then the carriage that floats the exhaust trim is held on by two more bolts in the squares, and then two plastic rivets on the bottom portion of the bumper.

Well if you could somehow get the 3 bolts off of the actual trim piece, you would then have to remove the two other bolts for the carriage as the only way to remove the trim is to pull back the carriage from the top and then angle and wiggle the trim out the backside of the bumper...

Ok so onto the DIY for this.

1. Remove the left and right flairs. This is done staring on the forward part of the flare and the rear door. You start at the bottom edge and pull outward, then you pull up and around releasing each of the clips as you go.

IMG-2839.jpg

2. There is one bolt on each side under where the flairs were.
IMG-8576.jpg

3. There is a piece on each side in the trunk area that you can grab by the softer top potion and pull towards you.
IMG-2400.jpg

4. This will reveal these bolts.
IMG-4763.jpg

5. Lastly, you need to pull out the reflectors, this is done by grabbing the larger portion of red exposed on the trunk side of the reflector and pull towards you. Inside there is a bolt.
IMG-8942.jpg

6. Now all the bolts are removed and you can start to pull the bumper off. nothing underneath needs to be removed for this. I started with pulling on the sides of the bumper at the bottom of the flair area, and started pulling out the clipped sections one by one. Here you can see all of the locations the tabs grab so you know where to try to release. A flat panel paper made some of these easier to release.
IMG-7544.jpg

7. Once the side wings are free you can work on releasing the 4 main tabs and the trunk edge, and then it should come free, there are some additional tabs that run down from the tail lights to the bottom opening of the trunk that do have to pop out.
IMG-8939.jpg

To release these I did this with my panel popper.
IMG-7506.jpg

8. You need to be ready to unplug this plug on the passenger side.
IMG-9823.jpg

9. Once you have the bumper off you need to remove these 5 bolts.
IMG-6262.jpg

Do the other side and then reverse the process. I taped up the edge of the rear quarter panel under the lights to protect during reassemble. But really everything goes back together like it came apart. Using a closed fist to hammer the tabs back in place.

Don't forget to plug the plug back in like I did. Luckily I still had the shelling from that side out, so I was able to plug it in with the bumper on.

I also made a quick mask with cardboard and sprayed the tips with some black high temp spray paint to hide them a little more.

And of course, some completed pics.

Nice write up.

I have done a few on G05 X5 and G07 X7, and I didn't take off any of the bumper. :)

Unfortunately, no pictures taken, so I can't share the DIY.

Thanks! Well you must secretly be AntMan! haha. I don't know how you could have ever gotten these out. I spent 4 hours trying. It took me a total of 30 minutes to take off the bumper, swap them and then put it back on.

Took me a long time to figure out the easier way without removing the bumper.

What I ended up did was removing the whole tip bracket from the bumper itself.

I believe it was 3 screws.

I managed to access them by lowering the muffler and rear fender liner.

I am still intrigued to find out a faster way.
Just need to do more. :)

So you broke out the two rivets on the bottom of the carrier? Do you have the tool to put new rivers in?

Yea.
Of course I have the tools. I am a shop. :)
Besides, that tool is not expensive.
Very useful, since needed to do painted reflector and others.

Ahh, this makes a lot of sense. Although as a shop I'm surprised you don't remove the bumper anyway! Seems like the proper way to do it.

I just ordered from amazon. I was going to do my reflectors without it, as I just did my friends, but def a task, so this will make it much easier. these rivets are newer on the last couple Bimmers I've had, and I never researched the right tool. so thanks for linking it! Should make things easier in the future.

Well, removing bumper have higher risk than just working around it.

Yea, the painted reflectors on G01/G02 X3/X4, G05 X5, and G07 X7 are much2 easier than the F15/F16 X5/X6 F85/F86 X5M/X6M.

If you need help, you can always swing by. :)

I have most of the colors in stock too.

Wait so you are saying that when I install the body painted reflectors this weekend, I will have to deal with rivets that cannot be put back in and I need to buy new ones? I have the front IND reflectors in body paint and I plan on swapping them out this coming weekend. I thought I just had to remove 2 screws and then pull off the fender liner on the outside arch that pops right back in once the install is complete, no?

You should make a DIY with step by step pictures on swapping out the exhaust tips without taking off the bumper :)

You will need to secure the air guide back to the bumper skin using the rivets.

Ok so the answer is kinda the same as this thread apparently. I did my friends front reflectors with out removing the two rivets, but when I did mine yesterday I did remove them and it was much easier.

I'm really surprised you guys can get this done even with the rivet gun. I'm about to do my friends and don't even want to try it again. I feel like the bumper coming off is actually way easier. But maybe I'm crazy.

It's a lot easier if you lift the whole car up. I watched my body shop guy do it without taking the bumper off. It wasn't easy as he hadn't done it before and it took a few hours. After removing the screws you have to use a flat head screw driver to pry and release a clip its hooked on to.
