I have been searching and unable to find specifics for oil capacity for the M50i. It appears 0w30 is the required oil per the BMW manual. Beyond that, we need other part numbers and torque specs for DIY oil changes.

-- How many quarts of oil are required? It appears 11.1 quarts, but I wanted to clarify.

-- Do we have part numbers / links for the oil filter and oil drain plug?

-- Does the oil filter come with the required gaskets?

-- Does the replacement oil drain plug come with the copper crush washer?

-- Do we have torque specs for the filter cap and drain plug?

Seems this would be good info for a sticky.

I found this link for the 50i, but is there a separate service manual for the M50i?

https://www.newtis.info/tisv2/a/en/g05-x5-xdrive50i-sav/repair-manuals/00-maintenance-general-note/00-00-maintenance/1VncqLtkuC

This notes there is an o-ring on the oil filter cover that needs to be replaced. It notes we do not need to replace the oil drain plug, but only the copper crush waster. It notes oil capacity is 11.1 quarts or 10.5 liter.

It notes the following torque specs:

Oil filter cover to oil sump upper part
-- Oil filter cap
1. Initial tightening torque 40Nm.
2. Slacken 180°.
3. Tightening torque 40Nm.

Oil drain plug on oil sump
1. Bolt size... M18x1.5.
2. Renew the sealing ring.
3. Tightening torque 40Nm.

Can anyone verify the 50i service manual applies to the M50i when it comes to oil changes? I can't imagine it doesn't, but hopefully we can get a tech to verify.

I believe it does, and I also cross-referenced the 50i manual with that of the M850i, which shares the same spec N63. I pulled the part numbers for the oil filter from the M850i as well.

So we can confirm these numbers are right?

We also need to verify the part number for the oil filter and that it includes the gasket(s) and copper crush washer.

That's a shot from the online service manual. It lists the exact version of the N63 we have in the M50i so I am considering that confirmation of the oil capacity.

As far as the oil filter, this part number is referenced for both the M850i and several other N63 vehicles on realoem, so I took that as confirmation of the correct part. And this part is shown to include the washer and gasket on most parts websites.

But it is not directly from the M50i service manual? I only ask because we need to be sure.

No, but I haven't been able to find that anywhere. I understand that would be the only true confirmation, but since the engine used in the M850i is the same exact N63 as the M50i, the likelihood that oil capacity or filter would be the same is like 99.9%

I may reach out to a service tech if I can to verify. Would be nice to be certain.

Definitely let us know what you hear...I've bought all the parts for a break-in oil change at ~1200 miles, but a confirmation would be nice before I perform the change.

Confirmed everything through a BMW tech.

The filter has the copper sealing ring (crush washer) and filter cap gasket.

11.1 quarts are required for the change.

Oil filter cap wrench part number is W11 9 240.

Torque specs are as follows...

It notes the following torque specs:

Oil filter cover to oil sump upper part:

1. Initial tightening torque 40Nm.
2. Slacken 180°.
3. Tightening torque 40Nm.

Oil drain plug on oil sump:

2. Renew the sealing ring.
3. Tightening torque 40Nm.

I did my 1,200 mile oil change. All the info is correct in this post. One note, the oil filter wrench requires a 27 mm socket, so you will need that before starting the job.

Honestly, like all BMW, it is a piece of cake.

Some of the aftermarket oil filter removal tools allow you to insert the ratchet driver directly into the tool (3/8") so the 27mm socket would not be needed.

Correct. I just picked up the BMW wrench because it was cheap.

Online spec sheet for M50i says 11.7 quarts for engine oil

Do you have a link? The dealer verified 11.1 quarts and the vehicle measures full after the 11.1.

How do you reset the idrive oil reminder?

I was recently speaking with bmw shop (not dealer) and they said the reason they (BMW) recommend 0w 30 wt oil is to improve/optimize fuel efficiency but they recommended 5w 30 because it would increase performance?
11-11-2021
I've been changing oil for 50 years (25 years BMW's) and never reached for my torque wrench. The oil filter housing is sealed by the o-ring, not torque, it just needs to be seated and snug. The drain plug needs to be 'tight'. Hardly any fasteners need a torque wrench. No way the dealership technician uses a torque wrench for these.

As for the filter, why worry about BMW part numbers? Mann is BMW's OEM supplier, just get the right Mann filter on Amazon. It comes with the drain plug crush washer.

As for viscosity, 0W-30 and 5W-30 are both 30 weight at operating temperature, so one is not for economy vs performance. Personally, I don't go for the thin oil MPG, so I'm still using 0W-40 in all of my cars. Funny how BMW required HTHS >3.5 from oil until it needed to eek out a little more efficiency from the oil and dropped it to 2.8.

My dealer recommended me with 5W 30 as I live in the Saudi Arabia and our temperature might have different oil grade than in North America or Europe.

0w-30 is because of the fuel efficiency and Co2 and bla bla but not good for the engine. Expert says 0w-40 or5w-40 is much more better for the engines

Google ai gave me 40nm for plug and 25nm for filter housing. So far no leaks and all is good
