Confirmed 19 inch OEM with m-sport brakes

I've just read quite a bit on the forums about 19 vs 20 inch winter wheels and the m sport brakes.

Last spring I bought my X5 and the dealership had a winter wheel promotion. I didn't even know that there might be an issue with m sport brakes and 19 inch wheels as I have always down sized for winter wheels. The parts dept didn't even mention an issue. I started reading these forums and got worried... I have the style 735 ferric set.

Mounted the OEM package today in the garage. Of course the rear fit with plenty of room. The fronts clear the m sport calipers by about a good finger to the wheel spokes and also about a finger from the caliper to the outside of the wheel itself. Drove and no issues so far. I guess I'll run them this winter and let anyone know if there are any issues.

Well that is super valuable information!

BMW should be constantly embarrassed by the extremely poor quality of information (aka wrong information) they put out to their customers and dealers and by the completely unnecessary resulting chaos and conflict they cause through that particular organizational incompetence.

I am also making my winter wheel choices based on dealer hearsay, not fact, as facts are not available. I would like to know what clearance is considered large enough by BMW. We have sand and gravel put on the snow and ice on roads in winter time.

How many km / miles with the brakes already. When I mounted my after market breytons on my F11 all was fine until a had to mount new brakes. They did hit the wheels because they where thicker. I had to mount 10mm spacers to solve it.

Ha, to that I would say, it well could be intentional to have the customers buy a larger wheel/tire setup resulting in more profit. I would not be surprised.

I have 6000kms now. Not high mileage so I bet they'd be fine with brand new brakes.

Drove about 200km on weekend and no issues yet. I have attached pics above now. They're snug but at least a finger around all edges. Tire rack says 3-4mm.

Allow 3mm in all directions from the caliper to the wheel. Note: the imagery and highlighted areas is meant to be an approximation to help illustrate the tutorial.

Probably meant for race/track application vs. potential road hazards but it does address my concern about hot calipers close to the wheel.

Has MS performance brake upgrade (factory)

Parts department say 19 inch bmw winter wheels will fit, BMW accessory website states they won’t with performance brake upgrade 19 inch discs

The OP above confirmed that the factory 19" winter wheel set does fit X5 with factory M Sport brake upgrade.

Thanks for this info. I'm looking for winter wheel packages, and would love to do 19s for multiple reasons, but am really fearful of not having enough space. Did you drive these wheels during winter conditions yet? How did it go?

I drove the whole winter on these wheels and not a single problem. I change my wheels myself in my garage at home and no issues with the brakes or the inner wheel. I'm glad I went this way and no regrets.

I've been pondering this as about to order M50i in the UK but need winter wheels as I ski in Austria over winter.
Look up "BMW Lee" on youtube. As far as I can tell it is a guy from BMW Calgary and there are a number of clips of an M50i demonstrator on 19s.

I have the same 19 winter wheels as OP and went skiing in Austria this winter without any problems.

I chose price and function above looks. They don't look (too) bad. I can live with it. I didn't want 21 or 22 because they are not compatible with normal snow chains. You need to have them in Austria. But you never use them.

I was first going for the 740m winter wheels same as my summers. The sales guy convinced me to take the 19 inch because of 1.500 euro price difference.

Looking at my pictures again. Probably for the price difference stil would have chosen the 19 inch again.

I think the 19s look fine. I'm not a huge fan of 35 profile tyres anyway.
My other debate is whether to stick on a square 19 or 20 set (I like the 738 style) and put Michelin Crossclimates on for year round use.

Is the only difference color ? Because if so that would imply that the style 734 would fit over the 2NH Msport brakes also.

Like mentioned I have the 19 inch ferric grey on M sport brakes. The dealer offered this combination. I drove around all winter without problems.

I think the ferric grey look better than the silver ones because they look bigger.

Reading this forum I saw some posts that 19 inch wheels wouldn't fit M sport brakes because they are also 19 inch.

I did some reading and the German product chart for winter wheels indeed indicates that 19 inch wheels can't be used with M sport brakes. In the Belgium folder it is not mentioned and neither in some other European countries. And I didn't have any problems with this combination my self.

I don't know what to think of this.
