I always like the sky lounge but unfortunately was unavailable on my X5. I found a retrofit version and installed this afternoon.

I think for the price it looks and works great.

I like that version of it. Is it a complete glass swap or something simpler?

It is much simpler, it’s two led strips insert to the liner then plug into the footwell lighting. It’s less than $100.

You can change color in idrive

Not quite the same effect as skylounge, but better than nothing :)

Given the cost and time spend, I think it is suitable solution for those without the option.

Looks really good. Did you document the install by chance?
Thx.

Unfortunately I didn’t. It’s a very simple install. The seller does have a video of the instruction, although they made it look much simpler than it is. I made a few adjustments on my install for my comfort level.

If you have issues during installation, I am happy to help.

Do you have any photos of what the led strips look like during the day? Thanks for sharing.

Looks great.
Unfortunately in Florida the shade stays closed 99% of the time.

Looks like with this option you see the light when the shade is closed and also who uses this during the day lol. You'd only be able to see it clearly at night anyway.

Sorry, I just saw this. I don't have any morning photos but the color and brightness is exactly like the OEM ambience lights. So look at the dash ambience lights and you should have the same on these sky lights.

Yes, it is installed under the shade rail so you can see it with the shade closed even in day time. With my black roof, it is pretty clear during the day with shade closed.

Day time look with half opened shade. Ambience color is blue

How did you run the cable down? Did you insert it in one of the side vertical panel? I am installing it soon, just figuring out the best way to run the cable in the roof out to the USB plug. Thanks 😊

I Did this mod too on my f95 mainly because I felt the interior lighting isn’t as sufficient as the previous gen. I hope you got the one op bought because it connects to the idrive and sync with rest of the ambient lights. That said you do not plug it into usb for power, the kit comes with Y splitter that is compatible with your car, the power source is the foot well lights. Yiu can run it to either side (driver or passenger). You’d need to unclip the roof panel between front windshield and sunroof. Unclip some clips not remove the panel. Once unclipped, there will be enough room to feed the wires and plugs. For the wires to come down, run them behind the side vertical pillar down to the either side of dash. There’s an end cap panel on each side of the dash, pry it open to gain access. This is where the vertical pillar meets the dash. Now comes the tricky part, feeding the wires from side of the dash down to the footwell plug would require the wires be wrapped with a regid stick. This takes a bit of time to get it to the right place since there are blockages in between. Make sure the panel at footwell for cabin filter access is also removed to help the feeding. Once the wires are fed down to the footwell, use the Y adapter to piggyback powering the new roof leds.

Thanks for the explanation. I am planning to install in F15. I will see how to unclip some part of the roof panel to feed the cable in. Planning to use the USB in the trunk. wondering what kind of clip does the roof has? How to pry it open?

Why do you want to power it by usb and lose the ability to sync with idrive? You’d have to use an external remote control I’m guessing. Kinda too aftermarketish no?

Regarding the clips, you won’t even see them. Just stick a trim tool between the metal frame and roof panel to pry. You would hear the clicking sound once unclupped. Pry as many as you’d need for feeding the wires. Once done, just tap them back with your hand. And same here you would hear clicking to know they are secured

I couldn’t find one that I come with hardwire kit. And yes, I have to use an app to change the color. I find that the sliding cover is very tight, I am not sure how I am going to fit and stick the strip so then it is still visible with the cover closed. Any close up picture of your install perhaps? 😁

For the led strips, if you bought the right ones - should be flat with only 1 side being illuminated. You would slide the opposite side into the gap between metal frame and roof panel. No need to pry or using tape. They will stay tight. This is the easiest part.
