What performance mods have you done to your X5 M50i, how has it improved/effected the vehicle, and what brands are you running? Any shared information on builds is welcomed!

I have a 2020 X5 M50i I bought used with 38k miles in May 2025. So far, I’ve done the following mods:

1. VRSF Catless downpipes
2. BM3 e30 Stage 2 Tune (OTS map)

Will be doing this mods soon:
3. RK tunes Front Mounted Intake (just ordered)
4. One step colder NGK plugs (just ordered)

Curious to hear about other people’s experiences and any tips to keep in mind with this build. Any info is much appreciated!

What's been your experience with your mods so far? Any issues/problems? Any performance gains?

No issues so far, definitely a HUGE performance gain.

Haven’t put her on a dyno but I was getting 12.6s at the track on the quarter mile. I’m guessing 600ish whp? Downpipes were a little bit of a pain to do. The RK intake front mount intake will require bumper removal so that will be a headache. The car has been great!

Do the vrsf downpipes throw any codes?

Yeah it does. Since it was going to be tuned with BM3, I wasn’t worried.

I was able to clear the code and turn it off so it doesn’t trigger the check engine light once I had the tune uploaded. Super easy. The tricky part was getting my DME’s (there’s 2) unlocked so that I can upload the tune.

Have you had any issues passing smog? I had an n54 with dowpipes and mhd tune which tuned out the code so that when you went to get smogged it past. Are you saying bm3 does the same?

Damn I have a 2020 as well, I’m assuming my DME’s are locked as well. Did you have to send them out?

Haven’t needed to smog the car yet, I can either put everything back to stock (which is possible, just annoying and time consuming) or have a smog plug. Working on the second option 😂

If you’re production date is Oct 2020 (I think) or older then some people in the state offer bench unlocks (I found someone in CA near me. They’re located in Silcon Valley).

You’re DME’s are definitely locked, let me tell you for experience! Haha I tried to upload a BM3 OTS tune without getting my DME’s bench unlocked first. It bricked one of my DME’s and I had to get the car towed to the dealership to get it fixed. They couldn’t fix my old DME so they gave me a new one. After that, I paid to get them unlocked and then was easily able to upload the tune

My August 2020 built M50i had DMEs that were manufactured in January 2020. As I understand it, the change in DME type around July 2020 is where the transition from bench unlock to FEMTO unlock kicks in. I was glad when BM3 reported my DME manufacture date and that all I needed was a bench unlock!. I recently had mine unlocked and am waiting for Black Friday sales to buy a license. My BM3 app still shows a warning even though the bench unlock has been done... so I hope I don't end up down the bricked road like you did!

I think mine did the same thing at first (cause I remember seeing that after I got mine bench unlocked) but I proceed anyways and it worked. I also went to a shop. They unlocked them and walked me through the tune uploads.

Make sure to get a hard cable and not that wifi adapter bullshit… it never worked for me but the cable does… that was a process as well. BM3 is not as user friendly as MHD. I can walk you through it when you’re ready. Just PM me

I’m not exactly sure what power is promised with BM3 E30 fuel for your car — it could potentially be 600 WHP. However, the 1/4 mile time you measured corresponds more closely to the 500–550 BHP range. A stock M50i (530 BHP) is actually quicker. This time is more in line with what a stock 50e (490 BHP) would achieve.
Of course, a slower time could also be due to a weaker launch. What was your trap speed at the finish line? Do you have any other measurements — for example, 100–200 km/h — that might give a clearer picture of the actual power?

I definitely gotta practices staging and can improve the time. I’ll post pics of my track slip when I get a chance.

I was mistaken, I got 12.023, 12.186 (learning to stage), and 11.713. Only have taken her once.

I got the before but never got an after one (pre tune). Now it’s tuned and has front mounted intakes.

if it’s not too much work, would you be able to post a video of how it sounds now?

High flow catless downpipes? Or just the chip?

Chip only….imagine what the m50 could do with downpipes and an intake. Sheesh.

And I can remove and install the chip easily anytime I need to hit the dealer for warranty work.
