I've received OTA updates for 2025-2/4, even though I already had 2025-4. Normal/expected behavior?

Sw Versions
iDrive 8.5 07/2025.45 (at the time of map updates)

Original Nav/Maps Version
Map NORTH AMERICA Joy
111072439.3.00, MGU22_25w28.4-1
Version: 2025-4 / - / - **does this look right w the dashes?**

After each OTA update the Map version info above remained.

Now I am on iDrive 8.5 07/2025.51. No changes (in case v51 had a map version bug info fix). BTW, I take it the above means I have the MGU22 head unit.

Looks like you are confusing the OTA iDrive update with the Map updates. Map updates install automatically and are not part of the OTA iDrive update.

Nope, not confusing them. I only mentioned the OS OTA update in case one questions whether it's a bug in OS.

Image of 2025-2 maps OTA notification attached and version listed both before and after the update.

Looks fine as 2025-4 is what is current and recently sent out.

Yes, so this is why I am asking why I got a Maps OTA update notification to update to 2025-2 *from* 2025-4. That'd be a downgrade!

Then even after update/restart, version did not change. Odd to me, perhaps normal to some here?

Since the update didn't downgrade it just ignore it and move on.

As far as I know that has never happened to anyone else so consider yourself lucky. ;)

It happened again a couple days ago on a road trip. iDrive prompted to update maps to 2025-2, twice, even though it is/was already on 2025-4.

Can one of you all G05 Week 39+ builds (for North America) send a photo of your navigation maps version screen?

That sounds normal if you were in a different region.

I don't get how it's normal. I have the 2025-4 full version from the factory (not local update). Why would OS prompt me to update to 2025-2, an *older* version?

BTW, the version info page never changed after the 2025-2 "update", and it did not prompt me to update to 2025-3/4 after 2025-2.

I'd like to know if others with the full 2025-4 show the same "Version: 2025-4 / - / -"
I am suspicious of those dashes.

Perhaps it is different with Joy but with the pre-LCI that would happen as the yyyy-qq applies to the regional maps and not the base. The base map version never changes and the yyyy-qq updates based on the region. If you were on a roadtrip and in a different region that could be what is updating.

On my previous BMWs, when it got map updates, it updated the entire US (with some Canada and Mexico) sections at once and the file was huge.

On my current X5, BMW decided to break the USA into multiple sections. From the factory, it had all of them (and a basemap, that as indicated doesn't get updated), but upon an update, would only update your 'home' portion, leaving the rest of them at whatever was there previously. To get updates to a new section should you cross the line outside of your designated 'home' section, it could take some time for it to recognize that, and download those.

So, some section(s) can easily be 'old' versus your 'home' section until you drive into a 'new' section outside of your 'home'. This probably saves BMW some licensing fees, but it fairly quickly updates, if needed when you travel.

It might be faster to get map updates when in a new region by manually changing your region in iDrive via the menu: select: "Map update" > "Automatic map update - Edit home region", select a region and confirm your selection with "Save". I've not tried this, and the choice might depend on what version of iDrive you have. That should be quicker than waiting for the system to recognize you're in a new region.

In my experience with iDrive 5/6 (nav NBT_Evo), the OTA updates were only regional updates, and when they installed, the Map Version screen added a row with the installed Version/Region. Example: "NC, SC, VA, WV, DC 2025-1"

My Map Version screen has never changed since delivery, despite 4 OTA "updates".

Regardless, on delivery I had (supposedly) 2025-4 for the entire North America region. It makes no sense to me that iDrive would ask to "update" to an *OLDER* version (2025-2) for any region.

I wonder if this is a bug in 07/2025.38/51, or I got a corrupt maps installation out of the factory.

I wonder whether this is the source of my problem getting “Assist Plus” to become available when using assisted driving. This is on a 1-month old 2026 LCI. The manual says that the navigation maps must be up to date. I’ll need to check on that.

Kudos to shawnsheridan who was able to dig into my HU details and determine that the factory installed Joy 2025-1 maps on my Oct 2025 (Build Week 40) MY26 G05. That likely explains why I've received a handful of OTA updates to 2025-2 and 2025-3 since delivery, but it does not explain why the maps version in iD 8.5 has always shown "Version: 2025-4 / - / -", even after each OTA update. (No additional version lines were added for any supposed region updates.)

If it's not a bum factory installation, why would factory install in Oct 2025 the aged 2025-1 NA base maps?

Got North America JOY 2026-1 OTA.
Now shows "Version: 2026-1 / - / -"

Anyone else get those dashes instead of update region info?
