I would definitely get something in writing. Also, please sign up to be included in the class action lawsuit if it is filed. Hopefully BMW will extend the warranty on the TCs to 100,000 miles.
I signed up for the class action.

As far as resolving the shutter issue, the repair invoice identifies the issue as originating in the transfer case, references “sib 27 02 20” and lists the mileage of the vehicle (verifying its well within warranty). If the fluid doesn’t fix the problem, BMW will make it right.

This seems correct, glad it's on the invoice. Once the fluid arrives and they replace it, they will tell you it can take a hundred or so miles of driving before you should expect to know if the fluid change did the trick. If it doesn't, of course you will bring it back, if it does, it's most likely only a temporary fix, especially if the Xfer case has been prematurely worn so you should have that discussion with them and hopefully get a satisfactory reply in writing somehow because at some future point you may be facing this issue again.
There are plenty of Xfer case posts on the forum for your edification ;)

Yes, I’ve seen what seems like horror stories for too many people. I think a lot of it has to do with the dealership and/or service advisor.

For what it’s worth, the Bloomfield Hills, Michigan location is phenomenal. They bend over backwards to make things right. I never have an issue getting my car in, securing a loaner, and getting the issue resolved quickly. When they don’t have loaners available, they pick up my car or send an Uber for me. I highly recommend them to anyone in the general area if other locations haven’t been as accommodating.

Good news everyone. I got a call from my service advisor today and they have “some” transfer fluid in. He grabbed some for me and they’re going to squeeze me in and swap it out tomorrow.

Fingers crossed the shutter goes away.

Great! It only takes like a liter or less if I recall. Let us know how it goes after you drive it a bit, put it through a good test, parking lot lock to lock turns, accelerating like you did when you first noticed it, turning while in reverse, etc. You're lucky to have a good dealership ;)

Hope the fluid resolves your issue, it resolved mine. Few thousand miles and not a hint of shudder, even was on some super steep mountain roads with incline and heavy steering lock. Not even a little shudder

I just purchased a 2022 x5 m50i a couple weeks ago with 18k miles. It has the new vehicle warranty until end of January 2026.

I took it in for the shuddering issue and was hoping to get the fluid change completed but was provided the following cause and correction. I understand that checking the tires is the first step or two in the SIB.

I already planned to change from the summer tires it came with (4/32) to all season tires so my plan is to go back to the dealership again before the end of the month if the shuddering continues, which I assume it will?

Cause: VERIFIED ON TEST DRIVE. INSPECTED ALL 4 TIRES AND FOUND TIRES TO BEWORN AND HAVE UNEVEN WEAR. SEE ESTIMATE

CORRECTION: RECOMMEND REPLACING ALL 4 TIRES, PERFORM ALIGNMENT, THENRECHECK FOR SHUDDERING.

I just don’t get this game. I mean I don’t know how many all wheel drive cars I’ve had and when tires are worn I’ve never had shudders etc. BMW just needs to own this bs and move on.

Agreed. Have spent quite a bit of time reading all the threads on the TC and Diffs over past 6 months…. How BMW even remotely plays “the tires are worn” game blows my mind. GTFOH with that… I realize there is some (truth) in there somewhere… but you’re talking SERIOUSLY mis-worn/mis-matched tires to even REMOTELY have some sort of impact, driven over a long period of time. Can that happen? Of course. Is that even remotely the case for 99.5% of these circumstances? No.

Completely agree with you. If the system is that sensitive that’s also another issue.

BMW needs to come clean extend the warranty to at least 10 years and 120k miles. Reimburse cost of fluid replacement and transfer case replacements. Name another AWD vehicle that is seeing failures at less than 50k miles.

Hi guys, my car has 41k mls Nov 2021 make, 3.0d MHT
I still have warranty on it but not for long.
Shall I go ahead and get a new case?
When stationery and turning the wheel I can hear some friction. Is this a common sign of the box issue or it is normal?
Also, my friend said that the case on his 45e costs like 8k but on a 3.0d is only 1k. Is this really truth?
Thanks

I seriously doubt this is true. I would think the drivetrain is essentially the same in all the AWD G05 models. I may be wrong. TB will know.

I’m taking notes from y’all…restitution ideas I can present during the lawsuit

You are correct, the same TC is used for all models.

If you have warranty then take it to the dealer, you have nothing to loose

I had a similar issue to you and it was cured by changing the differential oil

Update: After my last visit the dealership said I needed to change my tires due to uneven tread wear and low tread and get an alignment before they would consider it to be a transfer case issue.

I got new tires and went back but they are refusing to do the transfer case fluid service based on the following. guess I’ll try another dealership! My warranty expires end of the month before vsc kicks in.

“BMW is not approving to replace the transfer case fluid as first measure to test if the transfer case needs replacement due to the tires having the wrong speed rating and not being BMW OEM approved tires. The diagnosis on transfer case issues is to replace the fluid first and drive the car, and then if shutter remains and transfer case is found faulty it gets replaced. There is also a bulletin that says "below 40 degrees it is normal to have shuttering when vehicle is equipped with Summer OEM tires. We can't rule neither one out at this time.

their reasoning is BS

the cause for transfer case issues is tire rolling diameter mismatch, not speed rating or not being BMW approved. rolling diameters between them should be < 1-2% difference. your tires are brand new. hence, we can assume they meet that criteria but would need to know your tire specs

curious what are your tire specs?

i don't see how tires with the "wrong speed rating" or not being BMW approved affects the transfer case as long as their rolling diameters between them aren't >1-2% difference. the impetus for transfer case issues is tire rolling diameter mismatch, not speed rating or not being BMW approved

If your location is correct, you have multiple BMW dealers in the DC and surrounding areas, take it to another one cause this dealer is feeding you a line of you know what

Thanks for your advice. Yes I am in DC area. That’s what my Indy mechanic said too. He recommended another dealer and I’ll be going there next week.

  • tire width and sidewall ratio are OEM spec for staggered 22" setup, thus no adverse affect on transfer case
  • while OEM tires are speed rated "Y", yours are rated "W" which just means you shouldn't go faster than 168mph. ask them how exactly does going 18mph less for top speed affect the transfer case?
  • IIRC there are BMW "star" Pirelli P Zero tires but educate them that "star" tires ARE NOT REQUIRED; they're just highly recommended to maximize the performance of the matched vehicle
