Here's the process of getting the Military service incentive. You need to be the serving member or veteran, or the spouse or immediate family member (even if the serving member or veteran has passed away). In my case its my father who is the veteran and he passed away two years ago.

You do not need the DD-12 discharge document but you do need the veteran's service branch, rank, and at least one date during their service (e.g., their starting date at the rank) and you need the SSN, full name. If you can't find that information you could guess, I suppose. But you can also get the government to find the DD-12 with that info on it for you... but they warn it could take up to 90 days and that they get over 4,000 requests a day for finding this kind of info.

Once you have it go here https://www.bmwusa.com/contact/military-discount.html

You don't need to build out a vehicle; just look for the panel with the ID.Me button on it. You click that and the process starts. It takes 2 minutes. See the pictures below.

You need to get an ID.Me login from the government... this is what you can also use for your e-file tax returns.

For me today, it was a way to remember my Dad again and appreciate one more gift he gave me. I just wish I could take him for a ride and talk some more.

bosjt's user avatarbosjt Nice writeup and thanks. One can also use the TrueCar Military site to get the certificate where it will not be dealer specific.

Was just about to say the same, I usually send customers this link, as these codes will work at any dealership vs being shoe-horned into one.

And we should also mention that for members of the Navy Federal Credit Union you can get the certificate by going to NFCU's TrueCar site. https://navyfederal.truecar.com

This is great - I used it this fall - pretty cool. Hey being a AF brat and having to make new friends multiple times was just OK. But got to live in Alaska!

BTW I think you mean DD214 (which I happened to have as I setted his estate etc)

And if you do not have DD214 you can obtain one here https://www.archives.gov/

Yes, thank you - I see its called a "DD Form 214" like you said. I see that noted in the lower left corner of the photo my sister sent me.

I don't remember ever seeing this when my Dad was alive. It's a nice piece of my family history to have and read. I don't have grandkids yet but I would imagine they will find it interesting too!
