Just completed the transfer case fluid change. 2020 M50i with 28,675 miles. No symptoms just wanted to get ahead of the issue. Took me about an hour and didn't even have to jack it up. I also did not remove the transmission brace.

I used one of those 500 ml hand fluid extractors from amazon and I bought one with the flexible hose. It also came with 2 stiffer hoses but I did not use those. The flexible is the way to go especially if not removing the brace. The biggest issue and I've seen others say is it's not as easy as sliding the hose in. The channel to get the hose down to suck all the fluid out is narrow and seems to have a catch point. took me a bit to finagle it but after the first time I could get it to work easier the next time I inserted it.

I also had bought a new Foxwell NT510 off EBAY a few months ago when they were on sale. It was pretty easy and straight forward to use.

I was able to get 550 mls of dark fluid out. Seems about on par to what I've seen others extract.

I bought the fluid and new drain plug from FCP euro.

I also bought one of those special wrenches off the ECS tuning store EBAY page. It does all the diffs and transfer case plugs. It also is how you can do this easily without removing the brace while it was on sale. https://www.ebay.com/itm/234530015066

If you have any mechanical ability at all and can get your hands on a scanner to open the valve don't spend $500 bucks to get this done at a shop. Like I said it took me around an hour to do. If you can get someone to do it for like $250 to $300 I can see that since you have to buy some tools and a scanner so you could just have someone do it. I think I have under $200 bucks into it with tools, and fluid. But now I have the tools to do this whenever I want.

I do plan on doing the front and rear diffs soon.

I changed the Front differential fluid yesterday. 29,170 miles. 500ml was what drained out and I put 600 mls per what I've read and seen for the M50i using Redline 75/85. The drain plug tool I used for the transfer case barely worked for the up high fill plug. I would suggest you have a backup socket in case you can't get it to fit. The allen head is pinned on the wrench and should use a set screw that you can adjust the length in and out, but it doesn't.

I also did not replace the bolts for the drop-down reinforcement plate that FCP euro says are one time use. I've seen many that don't replace and I don't see any issue with using the same bolts again. If I do it again, I might replace then but I'm not doing it every time. They aren't cheap.

I was going to do the rear diff as well, but the M50 has fins and the tool wouldn't work so I have to buy an allen socket for that. My main concern has been the front diff and transfer case though so those are now done for a bit.

Did the same on a 2016 X5 50i a few weeks ago. Used https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06XTZ447K and a 19mm wrench to remove fill/drain plug.

I got 500ml out, I suspect the full capacity is around 700ml.

Have no idea how you did it without lifting the car somehow...

Some AI tools are claiming that some people are having trouble with getting the Foxwell NT510 to work on the transfer case.VTG adaptation reset.

Is this generally working for most people?

I did not have any issues. Performed as expected.

Just grab an old laptop and install ISTA. That's by far the best method for standard service and troubleshooting.

I used a 200ml extractor and some flexible aluminum fuel tubing to get to the bottom of the case. It's really annoying that these fill holes aren't put right at the fill line.

ISTA+ can be found online for free. You'll need a spare windows laptop to install it, along with about 120-150gb free space if you want the full version. It's the same software the dealer uses.

I recently toured the BMW training center here in California and they do use ISTA.

Is 28,000 miles not too premature?
I thought recommended was at around 50-60 k

Many people experience issues around this mark. I actually after changing mine realized I was having a little binding that I thought was the result of new tires I had put on a couple of months before. As soon as I changed the fluid all that went away.

In my opinion especially if you have a V8 powered G05, 50-60 k is way to long to wait. I will do mine between 25-30 k from now on unless I feel binding coming on before that.

I also bought the fluid for front and rear diffs and will do those soon especially the front. Once again especially in a V8 I’m not waiting. I’ve seen people diffs on these forums have issues between 30-40 k. The rear seams to be okay from what we’ve seen as well as the transmissions but the transfer cases and front diffs are catastrophic.

Hope that helps.

I own a B58 2025, didn't know this until today...
Guess I will have to change way earlier...

Is it just the transfer case or the front and rear differentials too???

We also own a 25 40i as well. I’m not as worried about that car as I am with my 20 50i. I still plan on doing the transfer case on our 40i. The data hasn’t shown as many issues with say model years 24 and on but that could be because they just don’t have the miles yet to know. Our 25 we’ve owned 2 years now and are still under 25k miles wise.

Some of the issues with the V8 cars is the torque and HP levels and all the heat which just toasts the fluid. Also supposedly early models like the 19 and 20 year models were sent out with wrong fluid. I actually don’t believe that one as much since we’ve seen so many following years have same issues.

I would consider doing the front differential as well for peace of mind. The rear for peace of mind as well but we haven’t seen too many rear differential issues.

Bottom line if you can halfway wrench on your cars it’s an easy peace of mind to change the fluids. There are tons of very helpful YouTube videos out there for these. Paying an Indy shop or dealer can vary greatly in price you pay for the service so check around.

Do a transfer case search and you’ll find all the information to keep you informed on the issue as well as the front differential.

Appreciate your time to explain....
We own several cars so the 40i only gets used when all 5 of us are riding together so our 2025 is also low milleage. I will definitely will be checking youtube.
