Exhaust Hack
If you guys want to modify the sound of your exhaust, without adding MPPK here is how to do it -- I did it on my 340i and it sounds pretty darn good. The system described below appears to be the same on the new X5:
There is a valve on the right exhaust. This is usually closed, until the engine gets above ~4000 rpm, then it opens. This valve is controlled by a servo motor. To see it you'll have to crawl under the right exhaust (don't do this right after driving, its hot!). You'll see a wire plugged into it. Put your car in park, put the car in sport mode and hit the gas hard. This will open the valve. If you shine a flashlight in there, you will see it open (the flap runs parallel to the exhaust pipe). Now, before it gets too hot, get back underneath the right exhaust and unplug the wire from the servo. Now the valve is permanently open. I then wrapped the exposed wire and the socket on the servo (kind of looks like a USB) in plastic and electrical tape to prevent it from getting wet, and taped it too the body so it didn't dangle below. A little ghetto, I know, but it sounds great and cost nothing. Has a nice growl and lots of pretty over-run burbles. I'm assuming this will work with the X5 as well, as all the same components are there, and I plan on doing it when I receive my week 49 build. If someone tries this, please post your results! |

The problem with the APP is that the code only work as long you have a constant connection (OBD2 +iPhone APP) for the exhaust to be open. Once you lose connection or turn off your car the flap will automatically to the close position. I tried this on my X5M and after 10 minutes it closes again.

Anyone else try this on their new X5 and have success? I would love to increase the sound of my exhaust.

I haven’t been able to get this to work, as the exhaust pipes are curved and I cannot see the flap, so I don’t know when it is open. I can feel heat on one side and no heat on the other, which would indicate the flap is closed. I’ve tried mashing the gas (which worked in my 340) to open it, but the lack of heat emission leads me to believe the flap remains shut unless the car is moving. So disappointed!

I've done the same to all of my M cars and our new X5 50i. V8 in the X5 has a nice growl.

Can see the actuator and am able to pull the wire, but because the pipe curves, I can’t see when the flap is open, and hitting the gas in sport mode doesn’t seem to do it.
Any ideas anyone? |

Start the car, put it in sports plus, Rev a bit then shut it off. Uplug the valves after shutting the car off. Simple really.

F90, F80 and F82, it was easier since you can see the valves.

I did this on my 340 and it worked like a charm. I can’t seem to get the valve open on the G05 40i. The valve isn’t visible so my only way of telling that the valve is closed is that there is no heat coming from the exhaust, unlike the other side witch pours out heat.
