US Spec with Euro connected drive 2020 X5 M50i
Alrlight guys, I finally got all features working on a US SPEC X5 M50I. I sent emails to BMW CEO for NA, and DE. I complained about the process how it makes no sense with the Technology in the car that this would not be possible. I found schematics that showed all the LTE bands that it supports and called them out saying there was no differences between the modules and I told them i was will to buy new hardware just to get this to work in Europe. Well all the hard work paid off and I was able to get it activated in Europe. I have upload the video of the features working.
The current TCU/TCB that came with the Car is US Version. No hardware changes made. I made calls to the BMW connected Drive Team in Europe and in the US. I think it was BMW DE that got the US team involved to finally figure out the issue. I thought I was out of luck when they told me I needed to replace the TCU/TCB unit. I called around and guess what they would not sell it to me because my car VIN didnt match the German system. Serveral calls to BMW DE informing them that I could not replace the part because its not possible to order the EU version. They came back and said well we will see what we can do. Well 2 months later all features are working I am currently trying to figure out how to code or trick the car to register to Germany Connected Drive. I was able to get logged into my Connected Drive US. I am not sure if it was by having my phone share its Internet connection or some how Telematics works overseas. I have asked BMW service for this information Example from someone else's car. No Coverage As Of: 11/14/2012 Expiration Mileage: 50,000 DAVIS #: 0 Assist Safety Plan expires: 11/14/2012 Assist Conv. Plan expires: 00/00/0000 TCU ESN / TCU IMEI: 10215544996 ACTIVE TCU MIN: XXX-XXX-XXXX MDN / MSISDN: XXX-XXX-XXXX Vehicle Production Date: 2008/01 Motor Type: S65 Platform/Engineering Series: E90 Wholesale Center ID/Loc: 20416 - 01 Wholesale Date: 03/10/2008 Retail Center ID/Loc: 24618 - 01 Retail Date: 11/14/2008 In-Service Date: 11/14/2008 But they were not able to give to me. I have the latest BMW ISTA-D Rheingold 4.21.12 with Enet cable and bimmercode with wifi OBD I was able to get the dealership to add Europe Maps. Now I want to figure out Connected Drive. I was thinking if I am able to get TCU ESN / TCU IMEI I can take this to any provider and get it activated. I have an connected drive for US and Europe. When I add the vin on US it says The vehicle cannot be added to your account. No data was found for this Vehicle Identification Number. But when I try from Connecteddrive.de CONFIRM SECURITY CODE. Note: For security reasons, you need to enter a security code. This code has been sent to your vehicle. You will find it in the vehicle in the ConnectedDrive menu under "Messages". The security code is valid for 4 hours only. If you cannot enter the code within 4 hours, please request a new security code after that period has expired. Security code: So I know it will work just gotta figure out how to get the Vehicle esim activated in Europe. Since in the US At&t is used all the Telematics are GSM LTE. No change to vehicle should be made just maybe on the Connected Drive system it has to be charged. Anyone have any information on this I would appreciate it. what dealership? My car is being delivered in less than a month, and the dealership (wurzburg) is still saying they cannot load European GPS onto a US spec car.
The dealer in Stuttgart is telling my friend with a 2019 X5 40i the same thing.

Yes. It is already built, and (presumably) on a boat, on it's way to Europe as we speak. It is scheduled to arrive at the Wurzburg location beginning the week of Jan 20th.

Here is the message I got from BMW
Dear Customer, Thank you for contacting BMW Assist Customer Care. __ Vehicle is an U.S spec vehicle. Furthermore, the ConnectedDrive services are delivered by a Simcard embedded in the vehicle TCU that allows vehicle to connect with all services. This SimCard is registered for the U.S market. Therefore, technology will not operate in other countries. Sincerely, BMW NA ConnectedDrive Services Customer Care Here is what I sent back From bmw Technical document state that it is an ESIM the technology is GSM which is what Europe and US use. https://www.press.bmwgroup.com/globa...es?language=en Esim is an eletronic simcard meaning you can change what network you want to use. eSIM is a global specification by the GSMA which enables remote SIM provisioning of any mobile device, and GSMA defines eSIM as the SIM for the next generation of connected consumer device, and networking solution using eSIM technology can be widely applicable to various Internet of things (IoT) scenarios, including connected cars. There are no differences, just like my phone has esim I used to have att and now I have Deutschland TMobile. I just give them esim ID which is the imei. "The core of the eSIM management system is that it provides a secure virtual identity, which is only activated after BMW ships the vehicle. Moreover, its subscription management reduces complexity, because BMW simply downloads a country‐specific subscription over‐the‐air. The result is excellent network coverage for BMW, as well as wide‐ranging intelligent services and apps that can be used for providing information or entertainmen" from BMW directly. If possible please provide my IMEI and vehicle mobile number for my TCU. |

Dear Customer,
The ConnectedDrive technology will not operate outside of the United of States if vehicle is an U.S spec. We apologize for the inconvenience. Sincerely, ConnectedDrive Services Customer Care Fax: 888-226-9492 PO Box 100035 Fort Lauderdale, FL 33310 I wrote back this What is the process to get the Europe version? Because Europe has there own connected drive. Please forward my email to a Connected Car Engineer team not customer care. If your department doesn't know technical details, a Engineer who design the application will understand. There is currently no physical limitations just lack of knowledge. |

Mjbmw1,
You got my attention. I got a 2019 and I have the same problems as you and many other people in Germany. I am curious if you can get the connected drive to work. V/r Victor

Mjbmw1,
I have nothing. No maps, no connected drive, no working Apple car play which is what I want the most. I look into the maps even if I have to pay. vic

Made some progress it appears BMW connected drive DE did activate the car on their side. I got a new screen so I know the communication is possible, the car is talking. I have European Maps and this is why they can try to activate. They are being very helpful with the whole process. Since it shows active on their side I do not see any apps or connected drive features. They are now passing my case on to the engineering department.
Pic is the new option after selecting a bmw Assist option. |

I just contacted my dealer.... and sure enough, the "official" announcement was made yesterday. Nav is working on US spec models in Europe. They found a solution.
This thread has been INCREDIBLY helpful. Truthfully, I'm not even sure what "Connected Drive" even consists of, so I probably won't miss it. But, not having Nav was a BIG deal for me. I pick up my car in the 1st week of Feb.... this has been a lifesaver

Thanks!! Been following this thread closely to see if there might be hope for us US Spec BMWs in South Korea. Has anyone heard anything about any other countries?
When I try to add mine to the CD Korea I get the following message: "I can't add a vehicle to your account" "An error occurred" Any help or ideas greatly appreciated. |

My wife drives a (US spec) 2016 Hyundai Tucson..... so of course, we brought it to Belgium with us. After many, many, many attempts at trying to load European maps onto her Navigation...... and after searching countless forums.... and even purchasing European maps to load....... Nothing. Apparently, "Korea" in particular, is especially stingy with their software. In fact, I read there was such a problem with Koreans, buying US spec cars, and then having them shipped to Korea.... FOR LESS MONEY THAN WHAT THEY COST TO BUY IN KOREA..... that Hyundai has taken every measure possible to prevent software interchange. The only way I can get GPS in my wife's car is to buy an aftermarket replacement unit. Now.... how will this apply to a BMW?? I'm not sure. But, you should be aware of the background.

Ninefourteener thanks for sharing! Here in Korea all things seem much more difficult than need be. I would like to try first to get the BMW maps/navigation working. I cannot see any technical reason why it won't work. My 2020 X5 has the MGU ID7 Head Unit and BMW Live Cockpit Professional (S6U3A). For CD there may be hope but feel I need to gather more technical details. I wander what are the differences if any between a US & Korean spec X5 with regard to the cellular technology used for CD in each vehicle. After all I'm sure that all these BMWs in Korea with Korean spec are using CD and have the BMW Navigation working. |
