This dial
I posted this over in the idrive forum but thought it might be a more general question so I am reposting here:
See the picture below. In my current car, 2014 535i I have this dial. I find it very handy and use it a lot to make small adjustments to the temperature when climate is set to auto mode. I do not see this dial when I stare at the setup online on my soon to be delivered X5. Is the feature still available? If so I assume its somewhere in the idrive. Can somebody point me in the right direction? Sorry not sure why the picture posted sideways... Thanks! |

It's not perfect. Well, the information supplied is, but the change in the BMW HVAC UX design is not. Having to navigate menus for that is a new safety and convenience detrimental anti-improvement anti-feature.

Completely agree; I miss those thumb wheels. But I also understand modern BMWs offer so many functions and adjustments that dashboard real estate has become extremely valuable. Those thumb wheels are among the latest victims (akin to the hand brake a generation ago).

never knew or used this! I always set the temp i'm comfortable on and adjust by hitting the red up triangle or blue down triangle to raise/lower temp as needed.
am i missing something with the climate control on/off? |

I see I'm not the only one that feels BMW made a poor decision with this implementation. https://g05.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh...72&postcount=4

The fact that there is fan and temperature control as buttons at all is exactly why I chose to order a 45e over its rivals. Volvo XC90 you can wait 90 seconds or more from startup to be able to turn the fan on waiting for the computer to boot up
Currently driving a Touareg in part because it has a Volume knob ! BMW could easily have made that AC Menu button an AC on off long press button as well, hmm I wonder if they could in a software update ![]() |

I get that people are upset and rightfully so at BMW's decision to eliminate the manual red/blue wheel. I've been used to using that beautiful wheel for over 30 years of BMW ownership.
When my wife got her G05, this wheel was gone. I was expecting to hate the change and I loudly criticized the move. That said, I have to say that I'm used to the G05 the way it is and I don't miss the physical wheel at all. For me, the auto setting is so good that I almost never have to touch anything, and when I do, its the fan setting or the temperature a degree or two. Mostly, I leave it along and let the automatic setting do its thing. I haven't even been compelled to go find the screen version of the wheel and change the setting. Keep in mind I live in a pretty mild climate (Bay Area). For those of you who shovel snow or burn to a crisp in the heat where you live, I have no idea if the auto system handles the kind of extremes you face in your neck of the woods. |

+1 here in missing the stratified air temperature control dial. I knew it was going away, and I thought maybe I wouldn’t miss it but I do. It’s not often, but there are just enough times that you want that extra cooling or heating to your face that I miss the quick adjustment you could get without changing the cabin temperature set point.
Also, as someone already said it was iconic for BMW interiors. Imagine Mercedes doing away with their door mounted seat controls. |

What was the point of this dial anyway...
When set to auto, you could just increase the temp by a degree or two to achieve the same thing. Both this dial and the temp change were within arm's reach. It never made any sense to me. |

I don't think it changes the overall temperature setting in the car. I used to use it for example if I changed direction and now the sun is blaring down on me, I could scroll it a few clicks and cooler air would come out of the vents immediately whereas if I changed the temperature setting it would be more gradual. At least that's how I used it...

The dial in my 500 series adjusts the air temperature for the center vents so you could have cooler/warmer air coming out of those while the rest of the car remained at the normal temperature. Makes sense to me. :-)
