Insurance pulls wrong model for the vin
Just picked up my 2024 X5M. I was trying to add the car to my insurance (geico) and they pulled up the model as X4 for the Vin. Same with Progressive as well. Very weird, has anyone seen this issue before?

Years ago, mine came up as just a regular X5 with the VIN from Progessive. I never thought too much of it. I think as long as the VIN is used and accurate, you should be covered. However, my scenario isn’t as big a difference as yours.

I had the exact same problem with mine last week with USAA. They had to enter a bunch of stuff manually to make it work. It originally showed up in their system as an X4. They finally got it sorted after an hour on the phone with them.

I had to show them the VIN decoder output from DOT to convince them I wasn’t goofing the VIN. Sure would take the X4 insurance cost though over X5M! |

There is nothing in this world that I wouldn’t do to a farm animal for that scenario. When I priced out adding a generic X5M it increased my 6mo premium 1600 dollars. My insurance for my Golf R and Durango SRT is frickin 1200!

Dang ok . GEICO kept insisting they can’t do anything and have to go by what their system states.

I saw the same when I got the quote. As long as the VIN matches whatever .. I had the same with my 991 GT3 when they came out first and it just said its a standard 911 ... whatever, their problem, you are not faking the VIN or anything.

Same for me today. Picked up my X5M and tried to add it to my Progressive insurance and couldn’t do it, got errros and the VIN came back to noting. Going to have to call them on Monday as well.

For USAA (after the X4 error came up), they had a workaround where they could add a vehicle using other parameters first (2024 model year, engine size-V8, X5 as model, etc)...then add the VIN at the end to get it registered as an X5M properly. We had to have the USAA agent ask 2 different managers to get it sorted. I'm hoping other insurance companies have an option to do something similar, but not sure.

Yes, it was going to be insured as an X4, so the rate went up when it was properly in the system. My fear was getting in an accident and only having X4 insurance amounts to cover the replacement cost of the vehicle.

anyone having Progressive here with a 2024 X5M? Does it actually say X5M as model or just X5? For me it shows X5, VIN is correct and under body style it says SUV 8cyclinder4x4. I was on the phone back then with them and explained what car it is and I had to submit pictures from the car and registration card (which says X5M) to underwriting, so they know exactly what car it is.
Now I got a letter from progressive that DMV records don't match what they have insured. Call Progressive that they have the right info and they said I need to talk to DMV ... talked to DMV and they said they have the same/correct info. So no clue why I get this later. Fun times.
