I have 6.5mm up front and 8mm in the rear (these pads wear very fast seeing how I mostly drive highway and have ~18.6k miles) so I'd like to order some in preparation. I'm likely going to have an Indy shop (if there's one by me who is knowledgeable and I can trust) do the work since I'm not driving 5hrs to the dealership for something small

A quick check with the power stop website now shows a different part for the 2019 G05 rear pads (for M Sport brakes) 16-1850

The rear pads you listed shows as a fit for the 2017 750i (with M Sport brakes)

I wonder what has changed to render a different part number when filtering by the G05 X5...

For those of you that want a simpler solution to the issue of brake dust, I have the MSport brakes and was getting my 21's covered after only 3 days of driving.

I did a bit of research and found this stuff;

Armor All Shield Brake Dust Repellent*(https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/...?ie=UTF8&psc=1)

Since using it my wheels now stay brake dust free for the entire 2 weeks between washing, it might be an option to those wishing to stay OEM.

When I compared the stock to the new pads, I noticed the stock pads had each side of the pad ground down to the plate making the pad much smaller than the back plate. Some would say that was just chamfering, but to me it looks like they were trying to reduce the pad size so that it doesn't compete with the stopping distance of the X5M when released. That's my opinion, but i've seen stuff like this on their M models
The pads are easy to change, but unfortunately BMW has made this a non DIY project. The reason is you used to be able to push your pistons in on the floating rear caliper, drop your pads in and go. Now the G body cars have calipers that have to be retracted with a computer. If you don't, your dash will light up with errors and alerts. I have a friend that has the software to retract the rotors for me so I did the job myself. It took me 1.5 hrs with a floor jack, flat screw driver, a punch and a 13mm and 17mm wrench. I've attached some pics for comparison. The black dust you see caked on the inside of the caliper is only after 3k miles.

I tried the Armor All Shield Brake Dust Repellent as well on my Infiniti Q50 which also has dusty brakes. I pulled the wheels & applied inside & out. I would say in the 2 weeks of testing it brake dust reduced by approx 90%.
Will use on my M50i when arrives. Simple solution.

Just got my PowerStop pads in for my X5 M50i. I ordered same ones as the original poster. I'm going to install them soon. I hope there is no issue with coding and setting the emergency brake before starting the vehicle once they are put on. That's my only worry.

You’re prolly right, just hard (for me) to justify the cost just because you don’t want to clean your wheels!

I would like to know the average expected life out of the M brake pads though!

I've always hated the brake dust and the dark gray trail of dust running down my driveway during a wash and the way the calipers look when full of dust. However, I decided to keep the OEM pads till it was time for them to be replaced, never in my wildest dreams did I expect them to last 80K miles. Well, they did (X3 35i).

Fast forward, I just changed the rotors and pads and went with ceramic pads and am now cursing myself for waiting so long. I can drive for two weeks without seeing dust buildup on my wheels, in fact the dust color of the ceramic pads is more of a light gray to silver so even when I get down close to the wheels, its hard to see it without running my finger over the wheel. Fantastic. Stopping power seems the same as with the OEM pads. I went with Akebono pads.

@Marty in Bgm agreed! I hate the massive river of black brake dust when cleaning wheels. I've always replaced the pads with something low dust on all of our German cars. Audi, BMW whatever, the brakes produce soooo much dust. Nothing was available for our Mercedes as the model was too new.
It makes washing the wheels so much easier. On our current Mercedes the wheels look nasty after 2 days of driving and to clean them properly takes more time than washing the whole car. The cost of the new pads pays for itself pretty quick in the time saved washing, more importantly the car/wheels just look better and cleaner for longer.

Just ordered the 16-1868 for the front and 16-1469 for the rear.
The shop I use also recommended changing the brake wear sensors as well, I dont know if thats an issue.

I just ordered the same pads.... and my car is only 5 days old. Hopefully the new pads will slide in effortlessly.

There have been a lot of "I'm going to do this" posts...... and not a lot of "I did this" posts.

Can anyone please confirm that activating the parking brake before touching the brake pedal will eliminate the need to clear error codes?

Welcome to the grand Akebono experience! I've used that pad exclusively for over 14 years on my Suburban and X5. However, today I still sit in the quagmire of excessive brake dust on my X3 M40i as they currently don't yet make a pad for my model. Frustrating is an understatement!

Living for the day they do; it can't come soon enough!
