There is so much confusion about tires. M+S tires are usually All Season tires that are not intended for snow despite the M+S symbol.

"All Weather" tires are different than All Season - unlike All Season, All Weather tires are intended for snow and have the mountain snowflake symbol.

All Season are not intended for snow. All Weather are okay on snow (but not as good as snow tires).

In Canada, All Season tires are more properly called Three Season tires to reflect that they are not designed for snow.

Maybe this is better - more covered in this storm.

(But let's be real, it was washed later that next morning after the road trip).

I've had All weather tires (K02s on my Tacoma with mountain peak symbol) I know what they are and what they mean.

Would I drive in All-seasons if I lived in an area that snows - no - as I mentioned earlier in the thread.

Would I take a good all-season tire from the SF Bay Area to Tahoe? You bet.

I will agree that even a proper winter tire can get bad quick if you are not prepared. I've rented a car in Calgary and driven to Banff where we got caught in a snowstorm. Having visited Lake Tahoe all my life, that snow I saw in Banff was nothing I ever experienced before.

Will do. We’re driving from Texas to Telluride in our X5 for Christmas, and will post pictures along the way. Any tips to prevent pics from appearing upside down?

I always resize mine so no side is larger than 1200 pixels and they work just fine.

Lovely pictures. X5 looks great in sites with snow and/or mountains.

Didn't know Telluride is a town in Colorado! Interesting what we'd learn reading bimmerpost I set my images at 2500 pixel wide and they seem to show very close to what I see on my computer. This website is more generous than some others I've been to. Yes, take some pictures.

Now my wife is annoyed that my new car has summer tires only and i'll need to get a new set of wheels just to put some all-seasons on.
If you're gonna get a dedicated set of wheels/tires, you might as well get snow tires, not A/S.
kind of agree. We'll keep beating up our 2009 RAV4 for the Tahoe trips for a few more seasons and then I'll get a dedicated winter set for the M50i
How do you like switching between the RAV4 to the M50i?

I only ask because I sometimes drive my mother in law's RAV4 and then get back into our M50i and can't help but marvel at the difference in power.

well, we do have the 270 bhp v6 but yeah, the M50i is in another league. The Rav4 has AWD but also 4 wheel drive which can be useful in the mountains

Parts of the Rockies this weekend could get 10' of snow! All I've seen so far is some freezing rain and sleet...haven't needed to go out to try and see how it handles that...the traffic around here near the holidays is horrible (not far from a regional mall).
