servicing transfer box

Trying to change the oil in the transfer box in my 2021 x5 40i, using the foxwell nt530, the oil temp shows 0.00 it needs to show over 20c. So it wont open the fill port. No faults on scanning. Any ideas.

I did the same exact thing two weekends ago. My NT530 just kept reading 0.00 C. I eventually just bought some small diameter tubing and shoved it down in there. Was able to get about 550ml out of old fluid and put in a full 700ml of new fluid and called it good.

So you didn’t have to open the ports to get the 550ml out?

No. There should be 700ml in there (that’s what the FSM calls for when refilling). I was able to get 550ml of that out but it wasn’t fun.

Something is directly in the way when you try and stick a hose in there to transfer the fluid out, so you have to have something sturdy enough and thin enough to snake down the case and get fluid out. Not sure if it’s any easier once you open those valves or if they’re just releasing more fluid.

I just called it good enough at 550ml, I’ll do it in another 50k.

What kind of pump/tubing did you use?

I always buy cheap one when I do fluid like this so I can just throw them away when I’m done instead of cleaning them haha.

I used the transfer pump to get the fluid out, then I like using the pumps that screw into the bottle to pump the fluid back in.

Thank you! I’m on the verge of performing this oil change as well and would like to be as prepared as possible for that tight space.

Is it hard to reach under the car? I read some people said you need to reset the adaptation values after changing the fluid.

Same thing happened to me as well with the Foxwell scanner. It did not work so, I couldn’t manage to open the valve inside the transfer box.
But, it is very surprising for me to hear that you can get that much of an oil without doing so. Cause, when I did I could only get 50-100ml.
Then I used ISTA for opening the valves and doing the recalibration.
But, even after opening the valves, it is not the easiest task in the world as you said. There is not so much space to insert the tube and feels like something is on your way.
For calibration, as far as I feel, after the oil change recalibration is a very important and necessary step.

One thing I did was use some small wire and bend it into shape as I fished it down into the transfer case. Then, I pulled the wire out and ran my tubing over the wire, so the tubing would take the shape of the wire and that made it slightly easier to guide the tubing down into the transfer case and get the fluid out.

Do you remember which way the pipe goes into the transfer box? As you said snake your way in ... Roughly which directions it takes for the pipe to reach bottom?

I’m planning on doing the fluid change. Ista connects and I can get to the VTG screen but I don’t see any options to open the valve nor reset the TC. Any guidance?

Just try to guide the hose downwards right away as soon as you start inserting it in until you feel it’s touching the bottom.

So I decided to do this service today on my 2020 X5MC. The build date is 11/2019 and it falls within the model and year range for BMW TSB SI B27 02 20 with incorrect fluid. The vehicle only has 6200 miles on it but the fluid is cheap and I don't like taking chances. I'm glad I changed it. It came out looking really dark like used motor oil. I got about 550ml out and filled the same amount to bottom of fill plug. Then I did the VTG calibration with ISTA and it had a 0 degree difference so I take that as a good sign regarding wear. Next weekend I'll do my daughter's 2020 M340IX.

Oil problem - Reposting again

I am hoping someone can advise. 2021 G05 and no big problems with transfer box at present, but situation is unique - car had water damage and there was water in the transfer box... car is only 15,000kms though.

So have attempted to replace fluid 4 times now, and can only get around 100ml out. Used ISTA to do service procedure and when it opens the valve, I hear TWO clicks (not one), so I am not sure it is opening correctly - although no errors.

Fluid removed is not good - whitish so has water in it. Hence need to replace asap.

I tried numerous tubes to remove oil, including 3mm tube and can someone confirm the pipe is supposed to go down the front channel vertically below the drain hole at the very front? There is NOWHERE else I can get the pipe through and it only goes in around 50mm.

Seems I am seeing different results to everyone else... But no symptoms when driving.

I just completed this and found that even the smallest tubing couldn’t fit down there. I grabbed a pice of metal brake line so I could bend it in a U shape so it could get down in there. And attached my extractor to it. I pulled out about 18oz that way.

Yes, it is strange since there are so many videos where people just pop in a 6mm plastic pipe and suck out 500ml with no problem! Are there different versions of the transfer box - I didn't think so?

People on videos make it look easy.... and it is... but you can't just "stuff" a piece of rubber tubing down in there... it won't go.

I used an actual extraction device... that was VERY thin, and metallic, so it was "bendable". The idea of the "wire" mentioned above would work well too.

Immediately down (90 degrees) as soon as you get inside the hole.... and slightly to the left... let's say "7:00". Keep pushing until it gets to the bottom. Once you start extracting, you should here the "sucking" sound like the last few drops of your McDonalds Coke. That's when you know it's 100% empty.

Sorry to ask again, but I suspect my oil release valve may not be releasing correctly, hence limiting the amount of oil to be removed. Maybe due to some water getting into the box?

When running the procedure in ISTA, it clicks TWICE and not once, as though opening and then closing again

Just wondering if people just hear a single click when this procedure runs?
