Start/Stop Button Replacement
While not for everyone, I think the Red Start/Stop button adds a nice subtle touch of interior style. Here’s the one I purchased…https://autotecknic.com/products/aut...01-x3-g02-x4-1
This inexpensive mod is way easy using the sticky putty method. Takes all of 5 minutes to complete. 1. Clean and lightly warm factory Start/Stop button area with hair dryer or heat gun (on low setting). 2. Warm sticky putty in hands to soften. 3. Press sticky putty over surface of factory Start/Stop button and form small cone to grab on to later. 4. Let sticky putty set for about 5 minutes to firm. 5. Quickly and firmly pull cone of putty and factory Start/Stop button easily comes off. Note: This may take a few attempts. 6. Line up colored replacement button and press gently until it snaps in place, 7. Test and enjoy. |

I actually like this relatively simple mod. I've always been nervous about the amount of light that comes through the new red button.
Is it the same as the OEM button? I'm worried it's going to be significantly darker than everyuthing else. Can you take a picture in the dark please?

Any advice on where to get an OEM style button online? I just want to replace the original silver metallic one. It has a bit of delamination and it has cut my wife’s finger on one occasion.

My 2021 X6M came with red button from factory. Maybe check for button number on realoem or check with dealer.

I snapped off the tabs from the “new” (red) button and dremeled them down to be flush.
After this, I decided to dremel the entire back surface and finish it with some fine sand paper to thin the entire button down a bit. I did this because I had read in this thread that it did not emit as much of the light as the stock option does. I wasn’t sure what to use for adhesive (it appears that at least in my case, the old button was held on just with an adhesive and not clips). I wanted something clear (don’t block the light) and also not permanent to start - but sturdy enough that the button doesn’t fall out. I decided on clear double sided tape for now. Unfortunately I had none, so I took some of the standard Scotch single sided tape (which is notably matte/satin finish and not clear) and did the old loop-it-over-on-itself trick. Oddly the button seems to stick well with this approach, and the light emitted matched factory from what I saw last night in my garage with the overhead lights off. Ironically, now that it’s in, I don’t know if I love it or if I should go back to the OEM option. Might work better with black leather and carbon finish, but with my tartufo and carbon I’m undecided. |

Red start button. Always red start button, looks much better with the CF.

Has anyone else done this with an LCI?
I noticed I have a delay/have to hold the button/something is off with my vehicle start now, after doing this swap. I thought maybe it was just me… but my shop today noticed it too and asked me what was wrong with it, unprompted. |

Figured it out. Sure enough, the button had unstuck from the button housing, which is meant to also come out but did not. Was able to get it out with putty directly on the housing.
Hope this helps someone else too! |
