I'm sorry but chrome isn't what I think of when it comes to 'luxorious looks'. I usually find chrome tacky in most applications I don't think it belongs on luxury cars except maybe a Rolls Royce in sparse application. Mercedes overdoes chrome to the extent it looks cheap. I think BMW using Cerium Grey on their M Performance models, think M50i is much better than chrome. my opinion will likely be very polarizing among people here.

I agree chrome isn't what I think of luxury looks but using to describe how BMW markets the X7. But to the majority of consumers and women it what comes to mind. I was using to convey the contrast between shadowline black and polished shinny trim. I'm also in agreement with you on Cerium - I really liked it when it was introduced on the F16 X6 - its different than xLine satin and shadlowine on M Sport. Now if they could just seal it from the factory that would be an improvement

Carbon fiber mirror caps
I went with the Autotecknic CF covers thru IND and they look awesome and fit great for $295, $600 less than the OEM caps.

+1 for Autotecknik.... good, high quality stuff.
I bought 2 different sets of "china CF" mirror covers for my previous F30. Both bubbled and started flaking in less than a year.... because they aren't really CF... they are ABS plastic, wrapped in a thin layer of CF (or vinyl wrap), and then cheaply clearcoated. You get what you pay for when you buy from China.

Just received a pair of cf mirror caps from ebay that I want to install. Is the only right way to install them taking out the mirror glass first and then unclip the caps from the inside or is there a simpler way?
I was hoping I can do this myself without taking a risk of breaking anything. |

Thanks, did just that. Ordered a set of plastic prying tools on Amazon and followed the video.
They fit well, I'm happy with the result. |

I know this is a pretty straightforward DIY, but knowing me I would likely break that mirror.
Has anyone got a quote from a dealer to replace the caps? I know it will likely be stupidly expensive, but just curious if they are (A) willing to do it in the first place and (B) how much/how long it will take them. |

My mirror caps came in. They look just as good as their online photo! They did a great job and an even better job packing and shipping it.
Going to install these this weekend. I just hope I don’t break anything lol... |

Well I did it lol.
Taking the mirrors off was actually easy. I followed the instructions of the above YouTube video with the proper pry tools and it popped right off. I made sure to apply an equal force on the front side of the mirror while prying from behind. I actually had more trouble pulling off the caps. There are two tabs you have to press in (see the red clouded area in the photo below). I used two trim tools, one to hold in one tab and the other to slightly pry away the cap itself from the mirror housing. I had to do this for each tab, at which point I was able to yank away the cap completely. I debated on whether to get the carbon or gloss black and I’m glad I got the gloss black. I really have no carbon anywhere else on the car and the gloss black blends in very well with the trim I have. Last edited by Frenetic; 06-20-2020 at 11:33 AM.. |
