2019 BMW X5 DHP, XDrive50i, M brakes

Looking for some help clearing the “480A12 - Read Brake Pad Sensor - rear Axle - wear limited reached” error. Wondering if anyone has successfully completed this at home, and if there’s some secret sauce I’m missing, or if once stored, only the dealer can clear this error code.

Long story, My 2019 BMW X5 (M brakes, 38K) started showing the rear brake pad sensor warning, I checked the pads, and they were worn. Replaced all around with OEM ATE pads, and replaced the rear brake pad sensor (GENUINE BMW 34-35-6-870-352) following the TIS instructions (activated parking brake in correct sequence). Car drives great, brakes work perfectly.

Unfortunately the computer is still showing the Rear Brake pad sensor warning. The reset option does not show in the dash’s diagnostic mode and my attempts to clear the error using BimmerLink are met with “Clearing failed.. please try again”.

I went so far as to short the sensor (don’t throw away your used sensor, it comes in handy) and go through the reset sequence multiple times, but to no avail.

There’s a lot of talk and videos on the internet, but I have yet to find a thread documenting an individual actually clearing this error code on MY2019.

Has anyone out there successfully cleared this error code on a 2019 BMW X5?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Wouldn't your car still be under warranty and even free maintenance? Why not just take it to the dealership and enjoy a loaner?

I'll having the same issue with a 2020 330i G20. Unfortunately, the dealership will not clear the code if the brakes were replaced elsewhere. I've tried clearing from the secret menu, regular service menu and using Protool from BimmerGeeks. Nothing works.

To able to reset the service for the rear or front brake you need to floow the reset procedure and the MOST important get your electric "hand" brake OFF before proceeding to the reset!

I had to change my rears, and I used ISTA+ to reset the code.

Do you mind briefly stating what the rest procedure is? I am with the OP and cannot get the “Brake pads” message off after a full pad and sensor swap out.

Ideas?

You have probably an open circuit on one of your brake pad sensor. Is the wire is cut or the sensor is damaged, the circuit is then open and you will not be able to reset it.

I'm also experiencing the same issue of rear pad reset not displaying in diagnostic menu after pad and wear sensor replacement. Has anyone come to a solution to this issue?

Problem solved, after connecting the two wires together on the old wear sensor, checking the continuity of the new wear sensor and trying to reset the message via BimmerLink and diagnostic menu multiple times, I've finally found the solution.

Within BimmerLink I decided to reset the "front brake pad" wear sensor and voilà, the "rear" pad service message finally went away!!!

FYI, the rear wear sensor message never showed up in the diagnostic menu and after changing the front brakes the front wear sensor message went away on its own. Who knows guys!! This has been the glitchiest vehicle we have owned in years. Bottom line, get yourself BimmerLink and a reliable wireless OBD2 scanner for simple DYI tasks.

I "attempted" to reset the rear brake pad warning.... and it failed. I figured I'd shut the car up and change the pads when I had time. That didn't work.

After I ACTUALLY changed the rear brake pads and the sensor..... I tried it again, and it worked perfectly.

"Somehow" BMW knows you didn't change the pads when you were supposed to... LOL

You don’t know how much I appreciate this post! This was driving me crazy. I tried the onboard service reset and bimmerlink with no success. “Release parking brake” and this post for the win!!

Thank you guys, problem solved for me too.

Replaced the pads and sensor with OEM parts, Msport brakes on 2019 G05. Have been driving around continually dismissing the error message for the rear brake sensor. I purchased Bimmerlink and a compatible ODBII adapter, but multiple attempts to clear the fault did not work.

Placed a call with Bimmerlink developers, had the wheel and the sensor off again, tried a new sensor... all of this and all I had to do was perform the reset in Bimmerlink without the handbrake on!!

Just for clarity, I cleared the error first and then reset the rear brakes in the service menu... All golden now!!

Sorry, I am late in the game. Just bought my 2020 CPO X5 xDrive 40i. Like to know if anyone has a video to show how to replace rear brakes and rotors? I googled but couldn't find one specific for G05 online.
