Picked up 2020 X6 40i
I was browsing in the dealership on Tuesday and saw this car in the showroom. I couldn't resist and traded in my G30 540i and collected the X6 the following morning!
The spec was pretty much exactly as I would have configured one for myself, except I would not have optioned the glowing grille and I may have added the lighting package. I have a black grille on order so will get that changed over when it arrives. I have also de-badged the rear since I took these pictures. The spec: Mineral White Tacora Red Leather Alu. Tetragon 21" style 741 M alloys Tech Pack - HUD, display key, park assist+, drive recorder(?) Comfort Pack - comfort access, comfort seats, cup warmer/cooler, heated front & rear seats Harmon Kardon Privacy glass Iconic glow kidney grille 4 Zone climate control Crafted Clarity interior elements Skylounge panoramic sunroof M Sport Exhaust M Sport Brakes Adaptive 2 axle air suspension Adaptive LED headlights with HBA |

If you mean basic as in not the Icon Adaptive LED headlights with Laserlight then yes, the X6 would require the £1,595 Visibility Package to get the upgraded headlight and design.

I'm going to reply utilizing the words you understand - yes the OP has the "basic" or standard headlight which comes on X5 and X6 vehicles. The standard headlights are fully functional Adaptive LEDs headlights. The basic headlight does everything that the Icon headlights do minus the Laserlight high beams - even though it uses only the two outside projectors. The one you're fixated upon is the Icon Adaptive LED headlights with Laserlight which is optional.

LED headlight 552 - Adaptive LED headlight (which looks the same as the one above but is adaptive and includes HBA) 5AZ - Laser lights (with the blue highlights) The X6 has 552 - Adaptive LED as standard with 5AZ being an option. So I do have adaptive LED but I do not have laser lights. I know the difference. As I said, if I had configured the car the visibility package which includes 5AZ is the one thing I might have added. But the functionality of 552 is more than adequate, I just love the look of 5AZ more than anything. Our roads are very well where I live and drive so the high beam features are rarely used by me. Beautiful. I LOVE the red interior. I wish so desperately, that my car would have been available with a red interior.
Had to get an X5 though.... my 200lb dog won't fit in the back of an X6. If it weren't for my stupid house-donkey.... I would have gotten an X6 specced very much like you did.

This is interesting. Here in the UK, on an X5, you have to pay £700 just for 552 on a 40i or 30d M Sport. 552 is only standard on the X6.

The interior is possibly my favourite part. When I saw it I was sold. |

Black grille arrives today!
Be interesting figuring this out as I have the iconic glow grille which is wired to the car. I'll have to find somewhere to secure the connectors as they obviously won't be used on the new grille. This will be interesting... |

The iconic glow is gone for now - I've just installed the black grille and stored the iconic glow grille in the garage. I'll be keeping it so I can revert back anytime. Fitting took less than 10 minutes, I just taped up the iconic glow connectors and pushed them into the hole behind the grille where the wires originate. Really simple. I'm now debating whether to leave the little slivers in chrome or black them out - those are on my active grille actually installed on the car and not part of the cosmetic kidney grille that goes in front. |

Hmmm, not sure - looking at the iconic grille, the lights look to be embedded into the slat part of the grille. I am just leaving it in the box in the garage as I imagine that grille costs a lot and I don't want to mess with it in case I ever want/need to revert back to stock. |

I got brave and took the grilles apart last night. Here's what I learnt - the surround can separate from the slats (as with all my previous BMWs), but the lights are built into the slats.
It looks like it may even be possible to remove the light units from the slats but that would be very involving and looking at the black slats, it doesn't have the screw holes in it that the glow grille does which the light unit is screwed into. So taking the slats and lights out of the surround = easy. But taking out the lights out from the slats = tricky/may not possible. I did all this because I although I liked the slivers being chrome against the black grille, it bothered me that from an angle, you could only see the slivers on one side making it look unsymmetrical: So I blacked out the slivers to make it look 'consistent', but the overall look felt too monochromatic: So I decided the best middle ground was a black surround with the sliver slats. I already had silver slats in my glow grille, so I just inserted those into the black surround. The glow function now works, but I don't actually have it turned on: I'm happy with this look - the silver slats give the grille some depth and as you know they are a brushed effect rather than shiny chrome. The black surround makes the overall look more aggressive. And its easy to revert both grilles back to stock at any time. |
