Regular Vs runflat
Are run flat really different in terms of comfort?
Im picking options for a new order. I want 21 inch wheels. But I dont know if I should do runflat or regular. Is nice to have the space used by the spare wheel (and convenience), but if run flats have a worse ride quality, I dont mind having a spare wheel. |

If you are strictly comparing Non RF vs RF tires in same size, brand, model tire, ect, in terms of comfort non RF will always win.
Above poster is correct you can not get non run flats unless you opt for 22" wheels (at least in the US) So when making your comparison, try to keep things apples to apples. Same wheel size, same suspension ect. But for noise and comfort, non run flats will always win in the same size and tire model. Edit: You should get the spare wheel regardless of what tire you pick. It's a $150 when placing order or $900+ if you try to add it after taking delivery. In my experience, I have never used the empty space in the spare wheel well and I am so glad I opted for spare wheel in my newer cars. The only caveat is for the x3, it will eat into your rear cargo space but that's not the case for the x5. |

The only run flats available in 21" tires - that I'm aware of - are either Summer tires or snow tires. There are no all season 21" run flats made currently, just for your planning purposes. If you plan on driving in Winter weather part of the year, you'll need to plan on either getting snow tires to swap out, or get all season non-run flats, in which case a spare might be handy. If you drive in Florida all year, Summer run flats should be fine. I haven't noticed a significant difference in ride comfort with 20" run flats and 21" non-run flats in a previous car, both with air suspension.

That’s like getting a truck that can’t carry cargo in the trunk bed So I had no option but to get 20” 740M wheels

Yep, had 21" A/S non-run flats on my Q7 with not even an option for a spare - just Audi's Tire Repair Kit (compressor + slime).

I just swapped out my original Continental runflat performance tires........ for an all-season set of Pirelli Scorpion non-runflats... in the exact same OEM size.
Literally..... 90 minutes ago. Difference is night and day. Runflats SUCK. I doubt I'll ever put those Shitty runflats back on my car. Check out my progress thread in my signature.

I have no complaints with the Pirelli Zero RF's on my 21" wheels. I'll be switching to non-RF's A/S tires later this year. No worries going that route, I've only had one flat in over 30yrs of driving.

Replacement at 15k!!
Took my car to the dealership yesterday for alignment. Service rep is telling me front tires are due for replacement. They are both at 3/32. 1 year and 15k miles. WTF. I don't even drive that hard. This is my 3rd BMW. Tires have always lasted me at least 30k+.
I have the 20" Pirelli OEM RFs on my 2019 x5 x40i. Service rep was telling me they make these tires soft for good grip. BS. I bet its a good trick to milk consumers. Replace tires every year. That's a good cash flow! I will be replacing all my tires with Pirelli Scorpion Zero non-RFs from Tirerack. They come with 50k tread life warranty and free 2-year Road Hazard. From what I read on here, it'll improve ride quality too. Win-win! |
