All of the hardware is captive...you set it in place and tighten a knob, then snap the end cover down over the knob, repeat until all four ends are tight. They recommend that you go around and check the tightness after you've driven a bit, especially the first few times you use them, as the rubber protectors might compress a little.

The one thing I don't like about BMW bars is the cross-bars don't have an overhang section past the mounts.

I know Thule have the option of both, but I went for the overhang aero bars as its useful for tie-downs, cargo net covers and gives you a little extra bar room over the edge which can be useful if you're lifting heavy things onto the bars from ground level.

The overhang isn't too much, only around 4 inches max past the rail mounts.

Has anyone experienced any wind noises with the box on?

We had Thule's Aeroblade crossbars on our 4Runner and really liked the lower profile, but they are $280/ea.
I happened across a smoking deal on a used set of BMW's OEM crossbars and couldn't pass them up. I'll keep an eye out for a good deal on Thule's lower profile setup . . . But not necessary.

To the OP and others. What have been your experiences with the OEM rack/rails and box? They’re what I plan on buying. Where did you buy from, did you install yourself, tips, tricks, discounts, etc? Thanks in advance.

Any outside chance my original OEM E70 bars for a non-low profile rails work on a G05 M Sport?

I purchased from my local BMW dealer. I had them ship it to the dealership so I wouldn't have to pay shipping costs or deal with the huge box and packaging that comes with the box itself.

I installed myself (really straight forward) but does take two people to reach over the vehicle and two people to physically lift the box and place it on the rails. One person can secure the box down to the rails themselves.

The markers for where to place them are super subtle and you have to feel for them with your fingers.

I was able to get a 10% discount just by asking. I am sure there are always coupons floating around but just asking nicely may score you the 10% off.

I have been pleased with the look and utility. No issues except some minor wind/whistling noise that can be alleviated with some duct tape on the tops of the rails. Some wind noise just from turbulence is unavoidable but its minimal. The whistling is what I have trouble with and that is what I use the duct tape for.

Hope this helps.

Painted the sides of the Thule gloss black, love it. Roofbars are originally matt black plastic (unpainted).

That looks cool, good job. How did you do it?
By the way, do you get any whistling noise from the bars?

The side plastics come off (the ones with the locks), brought them to the paint shop, they sanded them (you loose the Thule logo) and painted gloss black. Was like 100 bucks for all 4. Whistling noise is not too much (more with soundroof, but its really quiet. I discovered that if you remove the rubber which is on top of the bar (if you need to add a bycicle holder there or smthg) then it whistles more. After you carry something then just place those rubber lines back in (as when out of place they make noise).

They're actually 55", they measure around 138cm - but that includes the plastic cap at both ends.

Here's a side profile of my car with OEM bars and cargo box. I don't know what the noise level is without the cargo box because I take my bars off when I am not lugging the cargo box. With the Thule box on, I can hear wind noise at 65mph+.

Do you remember by chance which Thule FitKit you have?

The one that Thule site configurator shows is N/A anywyere in the US (184023)... BUT, some googling surfaced another possibility FitKit 4023... notice the same last 4 digits between the two. The latter is available in few places and it seems like it "may" work, but looking at the manuals between the two fit kits I get an impression that 184023 is newer, but basically the same thing as 4023... but since its not shown on the official Thule site/configurator I am hesitant since the may have made some tweaks recently to the bars and the old one may no longer fit or something.

Ok, that is completely different than what the Thule configurator shows...

Also not whats on your pic no? What you have on your pic is the AeroBlade... They are more aerodynamic, flush and don't have overhangs. Wingbars are the ones with overhangs.

On Thule site, if you identify your car as 22' G05 / X5, it says you need:

2 x AeroBlade Edge 7603B
1 x FiKit 184023

Cool to hear G05 and F15 have the same fit kits... I can use it on both cars then

For some reason shopbmwusa.com says 420 Liter Roof Box (Part #82732406460) isn't compatible with G05 X5 at all?

You need to select your BMW model and make. These guys are reliable as I needed to order an extra key unique to my Thule roofbars, they delivered. I know know that with these you always need to have it locked or you might loose the sides.
Its should be
Option C
Thule WingBar Edge Package

You can additionally spec the ones in black.

Here should be able to see all the options:

They slide onto the bar (you open the roof rails by unlocking the caps on the end, then secure the box by tightening 4 lock down wheels inside the box. I don't think its too cumbersome and achieves a tight fit and produces only minimal wind noise at high speeds.

You can see directions in this BMW video: https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=...-JHholuN3fJvy6
Seems like these 'feet' would work on any Thule box. I may test.
