I have a regular 15 and a 12 that I swap intermittently on the X5’s wireless charger. They both get warm (not hot) abd I assume that’s in part due to the natural charging process and the closed-in location of the charger (a design issue.)
My beef is CarPlay not staying connected. |

I had a Samsung note8 prior to my iPhone 15 max pro and didnt have heating issues with the note8. The note8 got warm in the charging tray. That’s typical of any device

why we still going on in this thread?
KNOWN: iPhone 15 overheats under normal use KNOWN: the specific iPhone 15 overheating issue that Apple addressed is unrelated to/not caused by BMW wireless charger KNOWN: BMW wireless charger causes all types of phones to overheat, but apparently iPhone 15 hardware is particularly susceptible to damage from it CONCLUSION: avoid using the BMW wireless charger (unless you’re one of the few it works for) |

It’s interesting how some have issues and some don’t. I have an issue with charging my BMW battery with Smart charger because it corrupts the cars computer and has to be reprogrammed.

I drove yesterday for 8 hours connected to Android Auto but not on charger and was okay. Definately wireless charger related. Just glad my phone battery lasted the day. That sounds really bad regards the software corruption. What happens when with errors? Do you drive to them or they come to you? |

A potentially significant part of a phone heating is what are you asking it to do at the time. For example, if you're using Apple maps, the GPS is running, and it's downloading data at a pretty high rate, or if you're downloading and playing music. Those things, when coupled with trying to charge it, put a heavy load on the phone regardless of the recharging going on. Those that are simply trying to recharge their phone, while not running heavy computing programs are likely to experience different results versus those that are asking it to do heavy computing at the same time. Then, if you have the iPhone Pro, it exceeds the maximum size listed for the wireless charging pad, and if you haven't centered it properly, that's another inefficiency that can add to the heat load. Having a thick case on your phone can be an issue, too. The User's Manual does list some specifications for both of those parameters...exceeding them is more likely to cause issues. Now there are wireless charging pad techniques that can help with uncentered phones, I don't think BMW chose to use one of those, which is why they have the LED status lamps to help you get it properly positioned.

I've had my X5 for less than a month, and currently on my second iPhone 15 Pro. Both of these new phones have had issues with the NFC. After speaking with several people through Apple support including dealing with their engineering team, they do believe it is an issue specific to BMW wireless chargers and the iPhone 15. Specifically, I have seen the 15Pro and Promax mentioned.

Been using my iPhone 15 Pro Max in the wireless charging pad for a few weeks now with zero problems, or at least it doesn’t seem to work any different than with my previous 13 Pro Max. If you’re using CarPlay, navigation, streaming music, and charging at the same time the phone is gonna get a bit warm.
It’s not a flaw with the charger or phone, it’s basically a limitation of the technology.

Maybe fried nfc chip, just like my 15 plus. I got it first day Sept 22nd, after first ride with my LCI, apple pay issue arised suddenly. Tried reset OS doesn’t work, so returned to apple store next day.
There are a lot of similar issues reported in apple community forums. it’s definitely a big issue from apple. I would wait for another few months to buy new phone again. |

The NFC may or may not actually be 'fried', there is a utility the service centers have that can force that chip to reboot that is not available readily to the consumer. If that does not work, they'll replace the phone under warranty but until they release the next s/w update, it may happen again.

The real answer would be if they would just let us plug it in and it starts CarPlay by plugging it in that would resolve any concerns because we would at least have the fall back but that would seem too simple for an expensive vehicle like this one. I’m hoping some sort of CarPlay fix comes out. |

I wouldn't assume that. My Ford pickup only supports wired CarPlay and is only about 40% successful at working on the first time I plug it in. The vehicle knows the phone is plugged in because it's charging and it will stream over USB but getting CarPlay to work requires multiple tries and then rebooting the whole infotainment system.
