Black Sapphire or Carbon Black???
We’ve placed our order on a June delivery G05 X5, with Msport pack, full shadow line trim and 746 individual alloys, amongst other extras.
We’ve chosen Sapphire black, but I’m now wondering if it may be too black dominant with the grills, window trim, window tints and exhaust surrounds all black too. What’s your opinion? Does anyone have pictures of sapphire black and carbon black in that spec? Any help, opinion or advice will be greatly appreciated! MP |

I've had a couple BSM's and one Carbon, and a couple blacks in other brands.., I would vote for the Black Sapphire. I always go back to that. Can't go wrong with either, but I wouldn't expect the Carbon to break up the black much. If anything, it might clash with the black, whenever you do see the blue. Carbon black will often look black anyway, just not as rich a black as BSM. It does look beautiful in good sunlight though and you're gonna get a lot of votes for it from guys on here with Carbon Black, shadow line and black wheels etc.
Like I said, can't go wrong, both awesome on any car. Here are some threads you may find helpful. There are several others if you search. I have a Carbon Black f15 with the standard chrome grill. I just ordered a BSM m50i with extended Shadowline. Figured I should change it up and the pure black on black looks better to me, personally. But both would look great. I just think you either go all black or get some contrast, ie white with Shadowline - but I cannot bring myself to buying a white car. Both BSM and Carbon Black will require a ton of attention to keep looking good.

Regardless of my decision it’s going to get ceramic coated to help keep it fresh. I do find washing quite therapeutic...but not daily |

Carbon Black changes color in all kinds of light from black to midnight blue. The best way I describe Carbon Black is it is 5 layers of black with one layer of blue way way behind the black and clear coat. It makes the paint look 10’ thick. Last edited by MystroX5; 02-22-2020 at 05:22 PM.. |

I would also caution the carbon black looks more black in pics than it does in person, in my experience. Mine never really appeared black to me, just super dark blue sometimes (anytime not in direct light).
A lot of pics that aren't in a lot of light show it more black than it really is in person, IMO. Pics with good light show the gorgeous blue through. But 80 or 90% of the time, looks like dark blue. Again though, both awesome and I will without question buy both again. And I take back my clashing with the shadow line statement, never bothered me on my 550 (didn't do the grill, but had it around the windows). In fact, that you can see the difference in the shadow line and the blue shows that it isn't that deep black like BSM. I loved the carbon Black, but still love that deep black like acf10's in the lease takeover thread a little more. Here's a couple shots to show what I mean (damn, I miss that car!!!). The one at the dealership is the way it looked to me most of the time. Dark but not quite that stark black like BSM or any regular metallic black, not terribly different than any dark blue. The one in the sun by the river shows a little glimpse of how awesome it can be in direct sun. So maybe it's best for sunny climates... |

I have Black Sapphire now and have had Carbon Black. Carbon is fantastic if you like how light changes how it looks (I do). Black Sapphire is also excellent, just a more traditional sparkly black. X5 looks great in both.

I had the same thought and went to the dealership to order BSM. However when I got there I found that the shadow line trim of black contrasted with the CB better and in my opinion was just a much more interesting color. There’s also some brown to the BSM I didn’t like. My friend bought BSM with the same and it looks great too but I prefer mine. Also I’ve always thought the red lights in the back contrast better with the CB. All to say I had the same thoughts and chose CB.

I went BSM with shadowline and black wheels. I wanted the all black look and Carbon just didn't cut it for me.

I went BSM with shadowline package. I'm not a blue/navy person which is why I passed on carbon black. Lighting isn't great but finally washed after getting ceramic coating.

It's x-line, not MSport, but I love my Black Sapphire Metallic with Cognac. The first photo is after a rain.

Despite the black in its name, it's more dark blue than black in any light. But does have black flake in it too. If you look close, you can see both, but for sure many more blue. Again, beautiful color. Just a confusing name lol.
