Order timeline
I know from other threads that when your order is placed, the dealer will provide you with specific details such as production number, estimated production date, and even a link where you can track your order.
My question is, from the day that your order is placed, how long does it take the dealer to start providing you with this additional info? |

Once the order is placed (priority 1 for US delivery, priority 0 or tourist delivery) then BMW will schedule production and you basically wait until it starts. In the case of ED, the factory will confirm your ED date, but production still is variable and you just have to wait it out. Once production starts you get the VIN. Here are the status codes and some examples: 0 Order deleted by NA 17 Order not Specified 37 Order is at BMW NA 87 Production Week Assigned 97 Order sent to AG 100 Order deleted by AG 101 Error in data transmitted 102 Special Order (no Prod Week) 105 Order out of Prod. Like others have said, I also received my production number on the same day that I placed my order.

Is there ever a scenario where the production number is not given to you on the day the order is placed? Something like production delays, or lack of allocation?
I placed my order mid-November but I have not received any specifics on the order despite asking. |

Maybe this is ok if you're getting a good deal and willing to wait for the dealer's next set of allocations, but the dealer may not be getting any for who knows how long and just stringing you along. If the dealer isn't being transparent with you, and it sounds like they're not, then you're being strung along. |

I just got my ED pick up date today confirmed by bmw. 11 days after I placed the order, no vin yet because I'm not picking her up until feb 12, that's the date I chose. Reason why it took 11 days was because had to wait for bmw to confirm.

First off, I wouldn't count on the dealer providing you with updates. Maybe they will, maybe they won't. Your best option is to get your production number as soon as possible from the dealer and then get updates yourself directly from BMW.
For updates you can call BMW in the US at +1-800-831-1117 option 2, then enter production number, then option 1. You can automate this in your smart phone by making a new contact and setting the phone number to 8008311117,2,,,<production number here>,1 I had this in my favorites while my order was being processed and checked in frequently to follow my car through the process. As others have said, perhaps the most critical detail is whether your dealer has available chassis allocation to get your car built. If they have available allocation that isn't too far in the future, you can get a car delivered very quickly, barring any production delays. Here is roughly what my experience looked like. Unfortunately I didn't take careful notes throughout the process so I reconstructed this from information I had hanging around, text messages I had sent, etc. I may be a day or two off here and there but the general timeline is accurate. 5 Sept Signed order 7 Sept Order placed 14 Sept Production begins 25 Sept In body shop 26 Sept Production complete! 28 Sept Transferring to port 7 Oct Loaded on Tombarra at Bremerhaven 18 Oct Unloaded at port of NY/NJ 21 Oct Transferring to dealer 23 Oct Arrived at dealer 25 Oct "Test drive" (car has completed PDI but isn't fully prepped) 28 Oct Took delivery I don't know how it worked out that my dealer had allocation available to have a car built only one week after my order was placed. Perhaps they already had an order in the system for an inventory car in that slot and modified it for my order. I didn't pressure them to get the car built quickly at all. In fact, I had planned to take delivery sometime in December. Can't say I regret getting the car early and enjoying it for a while in the slightly warmer weather though. I got m production number a week after I signed the spec sheet. Not sure if it was available earlier as I asked the dealer for it and the CA provided it that day by email.
