Supercharging - How does the sound change?

Unfortunately, I have not heard an E9x with a supercharger in person...only through video. Besides some whining from the supercharger, are there any desirable or undesirable noises at idle, on throttle, changing gears, or coming off throttle (from either inside or outside the car) as compared to stock?

Thanks for your input.

Mark

After you break it in after about 1500 miles or so the whine will really kick in, which is normal for a supercharger. At idle it makes a fair amount of noise especially if your hood is up, not really a whine at idle more like a gear noise. You really only hear this if your outside the car.

Your exhaust note will get more loud as well as some intake sound when you get on it, This is with ESS im sure the others act in a similar fashion.

Gear changes etc no extra noise other than the whine/intake sound going up and down depending on RPM. Make sure when they install it they align your engine up right or your engine brace may touch the manifold causing vibration.

*Also as a side note, with ESS's air intake the filter will press slightly against your front left fender liner. No biggie unless your running some really close wheel widths, then you may rub slightly

The exhaust got louder. But I don't hear it at idle from inside the car nor any whine under throttle.

With the hood open you can hear the supercharger. Sounds like shit tbh.

Doesn't sound to much different. Some more mechanical noise as some have said, but with the upside of the increase in power, the slight change in sound at idle is well worth it. My system and AA use a rotrex blower, which might be slightly quieter IMO.... but overall I don't think you have anything to worry about when it comes to sound and a supercharger on the s65.

My Harrop utilizes a Twin-Screw design, so it's a higher pitch whine from the get go. The whine will resonate when you go from full boost WOT to letting go of the gas to roll to a stop.

For comparison sake, It sounds exactly like the whine from a Charger/Challenger Hellcat in YouTube Videos.

A Vortech-style blower unit has a distinctive grinding/whirring sounding sound at idle, and at speed, you can hear the blower whine spinning at it's own higher rate compared to the engine spinning.

None of these sounds are overwhelming at all, but they are distinctive and give the car a unique sound. Anyone who knows anything about car modding will recognize it immediately. I've been stopped in parking lots by people asking if "something has been done" to the car, or "that's not stock is it?"……hehe And one time, I was entering a track, and the gate/sign-in sheet guy laughed as my car pulled up. He goes, "something's not stock under that hood!" hahahaha

People who aren't familiar with cars won't know anything different. It's not like a crazy loud exhaust that has people turning their heads if that's what you're worried about.

Any blowoff noises coming off throttle or during gear changes?

Depends on what valve is in use. Most use the Vortech valve (ESS and VF), which recirculates into the intake, making it very quiet, though its the standard 2-bolt flange so you can run aftermarket valves provided you use the correct spring. Some kits have external BOVs vented to atmosphere (like the Active Autowerke kit).

Agreed. I love how it sounds. Not too loud but menacing at the same time

I drive around with the radio off just to listen. It is subtle, but it is a slightly more engaging sound even around town.

Do you lose the legendary intake sound from the ITBs when you put a blower on?

Yes, but it's worth the trade off.

Lost the ITB sound? I don't think so. The car still screams at high RPM and you will be too dumbstruck by the power to really take in the engine note.

Hi guys. I know you might have already answered my question but I just finished installing my ESS 650 on my M3.. The first startup was very noisy.. Some whining noise coming from the belts and a very noisy probably mechanical sound coming from the blower itself. I'm a bit worried.. Any idea if all that is normal?

Thanks in advance
