Does everything think this will be a software only issue that will be retrofitable or won't be retrofitable to previous years?

As a software professional I can say that nothing is impossible. But I seriously doubt that BMW would bother to make car play an software upgrade. The backwards compatibility testing would cost a fortune for no benefit to them. I hope I'm wrong because I'd love to have car play.

As a big fan of Apple let me tell you, I've had it for over a year in my other car (via a Pioneer HU) and it really isn't that magical. No less inputs or integration that what you've got via the OEM BMW nav, and the fact that it locks you in to Apple Maps for navigation when you know you could be using Google Maps or Waze is a kick in the pants.

It doesn't integrate Sirius (which I use and love) and the third party app support is limited at best.

Since the CarPlay is mostly made for touch I don't think it will available for the current hardware.

Had this in a rental Chevy Malibu - it was so damn impressive with the talk to text feature; new texts being read out and responding to them. Can't wait to have this on my own car!
