Side vents

Is it possible to separate the chrome piece from the black backing piece without damaging anything? It looked like they were put together by clips but that doesn't seem to be the case. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

If you are asking if you can remove the chrome vent completely and repalce it with a different color vent, yes you can. You will have to mask around the vent with painters tape and remove it with a plastic shim.
The stock piece is held in by clamps and the replacement piece is too. However, it is best to use double sided 3M tape when you replace it.

Thanks for the reply. I have taken off the side vents already. I want to separate the black plastic part that connects to the car and paint that a different color. So is there a way?

I had to break the factory tabs to get mine off. It didn't appear that the chrome ring and the black plastic base were separable. Like mentioned above, buy some 3M double side for the backside of the new ones as I didn't notice clips on the backside of my stockers and I didn't see any clips in the void on the backside. They appeared as permanently attached and the tabs looked to be melted at the ends or something giving a permanent install.

zero4 yes, it is possible to separate them.
Use heat gun to loosen up the double sided tape glue. It held by double sided tape, like the iphone.

Do you know how the complete vent insert is attached from the factory? I got a factory replacement after someone tried to steal one of mine and broke the chrome ring off of it leaving the black base. All I have now is the 3m tape holding it on. Just wondering if I need clips or something to attach on the rear tabs. Thanks

There 4 tabs behind it that is need to be broken off. That 4 tabs is melted when they put it on.
IND have instruction in this forum on how to take it off.

Thanks. When i replaced one it looked like they had been melted and bent or something. So when you swap one, you must use 3M tape I guess. Thanks for the info

Correct.
Make sure you use a good double sided tape.
I used the 3M VHD double sided tape. It is black in color, not gray.
