Sorry to hear that man.

I love how people say this whole rod bearing issue only happens to a small percentage vehicles.

If you pulled over ASAP , and it's only the ticking noise your crankshaft is probably fine .
Rattle noises was TOO late and game over !

Note: Please "don't" start the car again to avoid further damage .

I'm really sorry brother ...

The engine shut off itself? Doesn't sound like a rod bearing issue unless there is a hole in your block right now.

No I shut the car off to prevent any excess damage. I was able to pull the car into a parking lot (500 meters of driving) and shut the car off. Got the car home and started it to
Get the video. The car just started making the noise without warning. Engine was fine at one stop light and ticking at the next. There is no CEL, no limp mode, no oil pressure warnings, no visible metal flakes in the oil, nothing. Car starts and operates 100% normal minus the ticking.

Nope, this happens to the majority of e9x M3s.

I can barely hear anything in the video other than faint chirping....what if it's just a squeaky belt or a tensioner/idler pulley? Did the ticking follow RPMs ?

Are you 100% sure it's the rod bearings?

See with this, it's an actual knocking noise.. Just trying to be optimistic here.😐 By the way, Rb failures are most likely to occur at 2k-30k miles

Yes the ticking is consistent and follows the rpm's. No rattle issues etc. it's odd this started the same day I installed my Turner MS under drive pulley. Could just be a coincidence.

Jayson,

Have you confirmed the exact location of where the ticking sounds is coming from? Do you have a automotive stethoscope to isolate where the sound is coming from? Bad RB's typically give more of a clackity sound compared to a ticking sound

It's coming from internals for sure. Stethoscope is at my shop until Tuesday when we open back up( owners on vacation). I'm not driving it there. Gonna have it towed again. I'm pretty confident it's the rod bearings. I'm very attentive about noises etc with my cars.

Have you pulled the filter and checked for metal? Spun mine at 59k on second set of bearings, blew gasket was leaking oil crank pully had a wobble, metal in filter. Crank was scored up when pulled out, would need to be replaced even if I was not doing a full rebuild.

I didn't see any metal in the oil so far. All of my tools are locked up at the shop until the owner comes back from vacation this week. Once that happens I'll know more.

Your UD install is more likely the problem. Let us know what you find.
