Oil Leaking Profusely after crank shaft replacement
So...I took my BMW to BMW of Las Vegas last Friday due to a bad crank sensor...I had NO oil leaking whatsoever when I brought the car in. Now there was oil residue underneath the car from a previous leak that was due to me not putting the drain plug gasket ring back on when I changed the oil on the car for the first time. After the gasket was applied, the car stopped leaking. Now the car is leaking an ungodly amount of oil and this did NOT happen until I got the car back from the dealership, and noticed the next morning there was a huge puddle of oil leaking. Now the dealership is trying to say that the oil pan gasket is leaking, which is the same BS they tried to say when they were working on the crank sensor and tried to quote me $1600 to fix. My question is, is it possible that something with the replacement of the crank sensor has caused this? Because from what I can see the leak isnt coming from the oil pan which would be pretty much in the middle of the front wheels. The leak is coming from the very front of the car where the crank is....I cant afford anymore diagnostic costs or anything at this point but the oil is leaking at a dangerous rate. Any suggestions here?

What type of crank sensor? If it's the crank position sensor, it is back in the bell housing and replacing it would not cause any type of oil leak.

I believe it was the crank position sensor. Its just really ironic to me how the car wasnt leaking oil at all before I took it in and now it wont stop leaking

I wouldn't be caught dead standing up for a dealer service. I've owned 3 different bimmers and each one has been fucked over by dealer service. Anyone standing up for the BMW service monkeys is probably one of them. I don't have anything positive to say to a "mechanic" who works on 1 brand of car and is doing it with specialized tools of the brand and yet they STILL fuck up. When I finally get my car lift I will never be in a dealership again! Fuck them all and their overpriced mediocre at best bullshit! 7g's to replace turbos?!......sure fuckos!

Good ongoing example with my EDC issue; Visiting the (in Sweden biggest/best/main) dealer. Taken care of by their M Certified Expert, the bloke with his own garage within the garage. They charge $250 to find no faults. After some push they give it another try by reprogramming the box. Now claim "yes it works", while it doesn't. Agree he has way less driving experience with this platform/EDC than I but still suggest he's right. Open a Puma with BMW and claim "they have never found this issue WW", while I currently communicate with several guys suffering from the identical issue. One would hoped that technical people actually would have appreciated the opportunity to dig into a new problem, learn and discover resolutions. The most frustrating part is that instead of trying to support the customer they instead tell him off as being wrong. If that happened in my world people would get their ears cut off! |

Appreciate your opinion, but it's just that, and to judge others who defend / share a different opinion doesn't seem to accomplish much if you ask me. But it's a free forum so carry on if you think it's best. Some dealers are bad, some are good. I have had two great mechanics and two great SAs and one great SM at my dealer that have for the most part competently ensured the health of my vehicle. Our cars are complicated, and I have found once you open a part, sometimes she is never the same again. BMW built her to work well when assembled at the factory but at times those same parts don't like being replaced / fixed separately. Cheers, e46e92

The Crank Position Sensor would have no affect on oil leaking. If you have a leak coming from the front, I would check into the front crank seal.

OP: If you are out of warranty take it to Sin City BMW in the old fire station near Terminal 3 at the airport. They are a great group and will take care of you and the issue with your car.
If you are still in warranty, take the extra time and drive to BMW of Henderson. While not pleasant, sometimes things happen that look related, but aren't. Also, edit your original post title by going to "go advanced". It was the crank sensor not crank shaft that was replaced, right?
