M3 E92 with Test Pipes can't pass NY State Inspection

Hey Everyone,

Looking to see if anyone has an guidance or experience with my situation:

I have a 2011 m3 6pd coupe and was lucky enough to get two x pipes with my purchase of the car last summer. One with a primary cat delete Test pipe and one stock. I've been running the Test pipe all summer. Love it. Now it is NY State inspection time to rain on my parade.
Does anyone have any ideas how I can get the car to pass NY State inspection since it keeps throwing my 02S codes? I'd be interested in if anyone knows of a spacer that I can use to get my sensors pushed back out of the stream to assist a little? I do not want to give up, but there is not a lot of room once the pipe is installed to actually move the primary sensors back either.

Thanks,

Your car probably won't pass with the test pipes that's why you were given a stock set of X pipes to go with it. Get a tune for the future to eliminate the warning light and gain more power and put the oem pipe on for inspection.

This..if they don't have laws in place against running catless. Wasn't sure on NY state laws.

Not sure of the laws in NY State, but in Cali all readiness codes have to be green. It used to be they allowed upto one not being green. Now that they don't do the sniffer anymore they require all readiness codes to be green.

If you have a tune the tuner would have to allow the readiness codes for the cats to go green even though they aren't there, huge fine....most tuners don't do this.

Pretty sure NY and most other states allow one readiness monitor to be out. CA seems to like to be extra strict.

Not in VA. No cats, no pass. I've been swapping my x-pipe with the OEM back and forth for a couple of years. It's a PITA for one day, but so worth it for the other 364!

Is VA a test smog in the tail pipe state? If so you are correct a tune will not help.
A tune will only help for states that plug into the OBD only and allow one not ready monitor.

They do a mirror under the car looking for cats in GA along with ODB. Some days the air quality board tells them to use the sniffer for a random day. I always tend to take the wifes car in first to see what happens ;-)

The secondary cats are a good head fake.

Unless they just changed it a few months ago, CA also allows one readiness to be false.

Does NY have a visual inspection too? Some states have that in addition to the OBD hook up and tail pipe sniffer.

My two cents: if you're going to start modifying emissions-impacting parts on the car, it behooves you to read up on your state's laws. Ignorance is not an excuse. :-)

May 4 2015 is the effective date. The only readiness code that doesn't have to be in readiness state is the Evap System.
