Enigne Serial Number?????

Just got a 35k miles locked up S65 from one of the local guy.
Planning to use it as spare parts.

The rod bearings look horrible for a 35k miles engine.
Also, it has sleeves. The factory set up doesn't come sleeves, right??
Can anyone confirm?

Anyone know how to find out more information of the engine with just the serial number stamped on the engine?

Thanks in advance!

Another sleeved block bites the dust. I can't understand the attraction of sleeved s65 blocks to people for this knowing it will weaken the block and knowing so many of them have already failed.

No, the s65 doesn't come with sleeves. This is usually done by people trying to build high horsepower, low compression, supercharged motors or track cars that can change out engines when one fails. The motor has already been rebuilt at least once. If the rod bearings are toast, most likely the crank is too. If you're buying it for parts, you should negotiate a price that assumes the heads are the only usable parts.

Can you post pictures of the crank, rods, and bearings? That could show some important information about what type of motor this was or wasn't built into.

I suppose if you could get the original car's VIN you could get the service history from a dealership.

Bent rods were expected. But the bearing wear was a little surprise to me.
Not 100% sure if it is sleeved. Will find out after removing the heads.

The seller doesn't want to disclose that information.

Fair enough, and he's not obligated to, I just hope that was factored into the price.

Looking at the internal pictures you posted I see factory rods and what appears to be factory pistons. I would highly doubt anyone would go through the work of sleeving a block without upgrading rods and pistons, not to mention factory pistons don't work with steel sleeves.

Edit: Upon a closer look at the photos, you can't see sleeves at the bottom of the bore....... To install sleeves the factory bores will be overbored and the sleeves pressed in so you would see the sleeves looking at the pistons from the bottom.

Looks like a typical stock block that hydrolocked. Bearings in that picture look typical for these engines. Doesn't look to be sleeved. You might be able to salvage the block but assume the bore with the bent rod has been damaged. It will likely require boring or sleeving later. The crank might be ok. Though the seller might not be obligated to disclose the VIN, I would question the honesty of a seller who won't.

I thought the last 7 of VIN (or something) was stamped on the back of the engine block? I know my S54 block had a S/N on it but never looked for a VIN since I the seller gave me the history.

+1
Unless sold at near scrap value, I wouldn't do a deal with a guy who wouldn't share this basic information which, at a minimum, would be necessary to determine if the damn thing was stolen.
