Rod Bearings at 89k Miles

2008 E90 M3, 89k miles of mixed daily and track use. TWS 10W60 it's whole life, I am the second owner.

You can see the copper is showing in all of the upper bearings. Crankshaft was smooth and didn't show any signs of wear. All of the crank journals measured out to OE specs. Replaced the bearings with VAC motorsports coated bearings and new OE bolts.

crazy... ive always been curious about this rod bearing thing.... if you replace your RBs at 89k miles how much more life can we expect out of this motor? i mean, what about piston rings? when will those begin to have blow by? i know it may be a silly question but sometimes i feel like just keeping my m3 and then other days i want to sell it...

Have not read much about any other internal engine problems. There are many posts about rod bearings. Just a couple about failed main bearings, a couple about vanos issues, and a couple about broken valve springs. Have yet to see one on failing piston rings. I have had my 08 since January of 2011 and dont have any plans to get rid of it. I did the rod bearings in 2014 when the warranty expired.

If you are a worrier or stressed about car problems and can afford it, buy cars under warranty and sell them when coverage lapses. If you cant afford that, find a more reliable or cheaper to maintain car. Enjoy your car if you are a car enthusiast, or find a car you can enjoy.

Turbo tuning is much more challenging than centrifugal supercharger tuning. Hope he can get it tuned. Supposedly Gintani has done it. Mike Benvo might be able to since he was involved with the Harrop kit and a positive displacement supercharger tune is also more complex than a centrifugal tune. Or he could go standalone but that makes inspection an issue in many states for a late model car.

Replacing bearings does not fix problem. Because of certain financial interests everyone hurries the myriad of reports of members who have had blow bearings AFYER replacing them with B/E, VAC, etc. In fact, on many of those they blew faster the second time.

Cheers,

Having just pulled VAC's after 13k hard miles and finding them perfect I have to disagree. We've yet to see a single member have a bearing failure with BE or VAC. I mistakenly believed mine had failed awhile back but when they were removed they were pristine and are going right back in the new engine. Other than squartus who had a failure with wpc oem's I've never seen a failure reported with aftermarket bearings. Got any links?

Given the propensity of STi's to have ringland failures, are you thinking about getting rid of your 2011, as well?

Links, please? I'd like to read about those, as I couldn't find any during a search. Thanks!

That is a lot of speculation about financial interests. Who is in the conspiracy? BE, VAC, WPC, and every shop that has done a bearing service?

Also gross speculation on replaced bearing failures. "myriad reports?" "many" motors with replaced bearings blew faster the second time?
