How to repair this paint scratch?
So it finally happened after 3 months of owning the new car.
Was parked in a lot for 30 minutes, came out and saw this pretty big scratch on my front bumper. What steps should I take to repair this myself? I want to wait till after winter to get it professional repaired, but in the mean time I bought the BMW Touch-Up Paint. I have a clay bar to try and clean it up a bit better, but I'm not sure how to handle the shredding of the paint. Could I run the clay bar over it or would I need to use sand paper? I would fill it with touch up paint, wet sand, and then polish (if you're not just going to get it fixed professionally now). It would drive me nuts personally, I would have to fix it now lol, granted, I have clear bra, so this probably would have just damaged the bra.

I would clean it up the best you can with a decent mildly aggressive polish and then use Dr. Color Chip to fill in the scratch.

clean area, touch up paint, then compound and polish after wetsanding…
if you are not happy with the results, a corner blend will work and be relatively inexpensive since its on the lower part of the bumper |

Larry Kosila of AMMONYC This video is pretty intense but it also describes exactly this situation you're in (btw, that really sucks). It looks as if your color is AW which is probably the easiest to match. I've had good luck with dr colorchip for even difficult colors such as YMB. Given the location and the color, a DIY job will likely turn out pretty well. As the other posters have said, and the video demonstrates, there will be some sanding and polishing involved. If you do it, post some pics of the results. |

How does a scratch like that happen to a car parked in a parking lot? I don't see how another car could cause such a fine scratch a couple inches off the ground. Shopping cart wheel, maybe? Bicycle pedal? And you're looking at a wet sand and paint. Clay bars are great at removing bonded contaminants, but they do nothing for scratches.
