E90/E82 Owner Considering F10 M5 - Differences & Things to Look For?

I've owned a handful of BMWs, currently driving a 2009 335i every day and a 2008 135i (racecar, gutted 750+whp) every once in a while. I've also owned other E90 and E92s. I'd be replacing the E90 335i with the F10 M5.

How does the F10 M5 compare? There aren't any locally for me to test drive, would likely search nationwide and have one shipped. Size difference? Feel? Maintenance difference?

I'm looking for a modern sedan with some luxury and power, while being fairly reliable. Pretty much narrowed it down to an F10 M5, F80 M3 or an LCI E90 M3. I feel like the E90 wouldn't be modern enough, leaving me with the F10 or F80. There have to be others who have made the transition or considered these same cars, but I can't find any threads when searching. Only comparisons of the E60 vs. F10.

What do I look for when inquiring about the F10 M5? Common problem areas? Years/packages/mileage to avoid?

I have my eyes on a 2014 Competition right now, going to start a conversation with the dealership after I post this thread...

Photos of current vehicles for attention:

I've started threads like this many times in the past lol The truth is, you just need to drive the car your looking at.

I just came out of owning a few B8 S4 Audis.. both heavily modified.. but its similar in size to your 3 series. The F10 M5 is just a whole other beast. Its not just the power.. but its little things like how sturdy the car feels when you shut the door, no rattles in the cabin, heavy solid feeling on the road, beautifully refined interior & endless amounts of torque (ECU tune and that torque is a monster w/ zero traction in 1st, 2nd and sometimes 3rd)

I drove an E90 M3 but was left wanting something else. Great car, but the F10 is just so much more..

I've owned both an E39 & E60 M5 before.. all cars including the F10 are manual transmission. Shifting the gears in this car is my favorite thing to do and why I will probably be keeping it for years to come.

its trash. too fat and loose. stick with the 1,3,&4 series. if you have a 750hp 1 series then youre gonna 100% be upset at how heavy fat and slow the m5 is and how much body roll it has in turns. and maintenance will kill you. transmission -$25k. clutches- $4k. motor $60k. differential etc etc

My $0.02 here:

1. your 1 series is going to be closer to the F80 M3s than the M5. Not sure if you're looking for something different or otherwise.

2. As said above, yes the M5 is heavy, feels like a boat, etc. I came from a E92 M3. I had e92 and e90 325xi before that (6MTs). F10 does not give me the same visceral feel as those cars.

3. The M5 is not trying to be a M3 or M4. It has it's own identity as a superfast saloon which can haul your entire family. It aims to strike a balance between that and someone who wants to have an occasional spirited drive.

For me, I have owned mine just under a year and I'm coming around to loving it. Also, I'm at a different phase in life now than when I owned my E series.

My best buddy drives a heavily tuned Honda Accord 6MT (2019) and I get more fun zipping his car around the autocross on occasions. Still love my M5 but this gives you a sense of how heavy this car is.
