ESS VT625 Mfest Drag Strip results...

Well I'd only had the car less than a week, did some vbox pulls the 2nd day with the VT575 setup, and managed a great time for only 6psi of boost. A few days later was the drive down to Mfest, I was caravaning down with a group of good friends, still running the VT575 pulley. A Modded GT-R, 2012 GTR, C6 Z06, and others. I can't say we didn't have a few spirited runs along the way, let's just say Dean's Modded GT-R and I are very close, the vid is out there on youtube as well. On the drag strip well, that was a far different outcome, lol.

When I got to the track, Roman@ESS and Alex (from Alexshop) installed the 7.5psi pulley, but we keep the VT575 91 file, it's a very safe file and has nice fat AFR's up top and the timing is not aggressive. I wanted to keep it safe. Vegas does not have a very fast track, but knowing all the cars that would be there, collectively everyone would probably run subpar times, and it would be fun to give it a go anyway, especially when a lot of good friends are there as well running their cars.

I hadn't tried the DR's yet, MT 305/35/18's I picked up from Mikewads, and in the past the DCT gave me problems when trying to heat the tires up with a supercharger. It was difficult to warm them up without the DCT tranny over heating, and even if I didn't heat them up and launched, if the tires spun, at times the DCT would throw the car in limp mode, to keep it from overheating.

At first the track was not spraying any water down for burnouts, so I had no luck getting the tires to spin while holding the brake. I found two issues, the first was these MT Drag Radials were too much tire, the car had trouble heating them up, even after they finally put down some water! If you can't heat DR's up they are almost like running street tires, possibly worse, they need to get really hot. I tried a few times managed a little burnout etc. but just too much tire really. However when I launched the car it would still spin the tires, sometimes even through the 2nd to 3rd shift, so I gave up trying to heat the tires and decided to just baby it out of the hole and then punch it, even then the car would lose traction.

One thing I discovered in all of this and in the past had been vocally skeptical about, is ESS' claim that their DCT software actually helps prevent the tranny from overheating. I simply did not believe it was possible, BUT I was wrong, my tranny even after trying burnouts on many runs, and doing 17 back to back 1/4 mile passes, never gave me an issue, not one. This is huge in my book, I don't believe you need an upgraded cooler, etc. to keep it from overheating for Drag racing. I believe now I will run a smaller DR, one that I can really heat up, and I can finally launch this car without it overheating, and possibly get some really good times at a track with decent air. That alone made me really happy.

The car managed a best time of 11.88 @ 125MPH, with a DA ranging between 3700-4000' through the night, and after looking at all of the results from the other cars (vid below), I was very pleased with the #'s and how the car performed and held up, especially knowing my est 60' time, do to bad traction, and not being able to heat up the DR's properly, was a lackluster 2.1, if I had simply did a 1.8 60', the car would have went 11.2, so 10's in this car are doable with a good launch and a decent track, and this is boost only, 7.5 psi.

Here is a summary of all my runs, and a comparison graph with actual vs. the Vbox.

FWIW the Vegas track did show a .75-1% uphill slope, here are a few graphs that show the slope and the wheel spin that took place.

Here are some other times to compare with from that night, very subpar for what they normally do in decent air -

Stock E9X M3's, 13-15s @ 102-105MPH
NA E46 M3's, 14-15's @ 98MPH
E60 M5 13's @ 108-110MPH
C6 Z06 12's @ 117-118MPH
Stock E55 13-14's @ 103MPH
Modded E55 - 12's @ 113MPH
2012 GTR 530HP LC, 11.4 @ 117-118MPH
HPF E46 M3 Turbo STage 2 Pump + Meth, 13's @ 122-123MPH
HPF E46 M3 Turbo Stage 2.5 Pump + Meth ,12's @ 127-128MPH
HPF E46 M3 Turbo Stage 2.5 Race + Meth, 12's @ 132mph
HPF Stage 2.75 Pump + Meth, 12's @ 129MPH
HPF Stage 2.75 Race fuel + Meth (800whp) 11.64 @ 136MPH
HPF Stage 4 Race Fuel + Meth (750whp) 11.00 @ 131MPH
996TT, K16's, ECU Flash, 13's @ 111mph

Here is a vid of most of my runs, some are just flat out terrible, but of course it's rare that every pass a good one. Never had a run where all the way through there was no wheel spin. Even with MT DR's at 20psi! Big Thanks to Robert (PG) for putting all this together and letting me use his Vbox to record from inside the car, thank you Robert!

Here is another video that Robert put together with many of the other cars running, it's part one, part two and possibly three, will come later.

Nice write up and comparisons. Mu car was at the track that night as well. Your car sounds amazing!

My car did a best if 13.5@107 mph with a sh!tty 2.3xx 60' times.

I was disappointed in the results but now seeing what other cars did I don't feel too bad.

Impressive display of durability Drew. Only 5 minutes of cooldown before your fastest pass of the night? Crazy -- and that doesn't even count driving back down the return and the burnout!

I'm telling you I wouldn't be surprised If you trapped 135mph at sea level ... When I spoke to Robert I told him the same thing... I wasn't impressed by the 125mph trap but when I was informed on the altitude and confirmed what other cars trapped and after talking with a couple of buddies that drag like it's going out of style they said the same thing , expect a 130+ mph trap.
These cars self adapt to weather !!! They do 2million calculations per sec ..... Or something crazy like that .
A BMW tech buddy who is top 5 master techs in the east coast confirmed this.
To have your car perform and run the way ESS has it working is a fukcing miracle !! You will never ever see an other company achieve what they have with this plat form PERIOD .
AA 520whp with Meth and 8lbs & 2 BOV & 1 Bypass very efficient ... R u kidding me...... I put down 535 with stock cats and 6 psi & 1 unefficient Bypass Valve ,Thats why support Roman & AJ"" honesty and quality"" !!
To Drew now we all now you will have your M for a very long time and will continue to see Awesome results from you thanks to ESS

FYI: Me Izzy & a bunch of buddy's are renting out English town NJ track for the day sea leveled track ....
Now here is the key playing factor to all the above mentioned Facts =People who love their M's deserve to enjoy their cars day in day out with out any headaches ...

Thank you! You shouldn't feel bad, most were at 102-104, so your mods are working, nicely done.

Awesome write up Drew! It was great to see you at MFest and even more impressive is how you hammered your car with ZERO issues! I know that you will only improve with each and every race!

FWIW I went out and did a 1/4 mile VBox pull on the stock RE11 tires, I had major problems hooking up and had to lift in order to get traction, so no doubt it has an awesome ET in it if I could get a solid launch, that wasn't the main factor here, I wanted to see a trap speed at sea level. With not being able to stay in throttle the entire time, this 102 1/8th mile trap and 130 1/4 mile trap is damn good.

Below is a screenshot of the run. I have Robert taking a look at the file, the graph will show the wheelspin and throttle lift. He will analyze the graph and calculate the trap speed as a 1/4 mile track would measure it, meaning the average speed 66' before the finish line.

This was with the VT625 pulley 7.5psi, VT575 91 octane only file, 91/100 mix approx 95 octane, Water Meth enabled, street tires, 55 degrees.

Here is the graph that was analyzed by Robert, it gives us an approx. idea of what the actual #'s would have been at an NHRA track. You can see in the graph where the traction issues took place and I had to lift off the throttle.

Drew, have you done back to back comparisons with and without the meth? If so what were the results?

The Meth based on ESS' tests saw a 15whp gain simply by turning it on. I left it on for this run, I wanted to do one without, but too much spin, and I was pushing my luck even on a road far from anyone. I did do a 60-130 as well without meth and managed a solid time, I will make a thread on that.

I updated my last post with the actual Vbox graph, showing the wheel spin in 1st and 2nd gear, as well as what the approx. time would be at an NHRA track.

I'm also curious how quickly it will pull timing back. Is it more of a gradual adaptation like this:

(fictitious 60-130 times)

baseline with meth: 7.4s
1st run w/o meth: 7.6
2nd run w/o meth: 7.7
3rd run w/o meth: 7.8
4th run w/o meth: 7.8
5th run w/o meth: 7.9

Or does it pretty instantly drop to a base level like:

baseline with meth: 7.4s
1st run w/o meth: 7.7
2nd run w/o meth: 7.9
3rd run w/o meth: 7.9
