Might be time to start the modding...
My previous car was a 650RWHP 2010 Camaro. I got the M3 because I wanted a totally different experience, and so far I have it..... But now I'm bored.
I never keep a car more than 2 years, 3 at max, so I dont want to spend 10k+ on a supercharger and have things break and pay to fix them, pay to maintain, then lose money on resell (basically my camaro). I want to do some pretty simple mods. Maybe exhaust for sound with an Xpipe, an underdrive pulley, a tune, and a drop in filter. From my research I've read a tune, xpipe, pulley, and drop in filter should be about $1,600 and 40-45 whp? If I'm wrong correct me. In the Camaro 40 horsepower could be attained for about 400 dollars, so this is a lot to me for what I'm getting. Is it worth it? Do those mods really make a noticeable difference in the car, or will it be cool for 2 weeks and then I'll stop noticing it because it's so subtle? I'm just looking to wake the car up a bit.. In other words, if I do all these mods, I want to get in the car and say "OH MAN THAT MADE A HUGE DIFFERENCE THIS IS FUN OKAY. YES." |

Noticeable? Yes. But probably not what you're used to :/
What about suspension and take the M to the track? That might rekindle your love/appreciation for the car. |

You know, I REALLY want to. I'm going to a drag strip tonight to watch a local 9 second 5th gen Camaro run for it's first time. Makes me want to drag race the M3, but it almost seems pointless to drag race a stock car. I know I'll run either around a 13 second 1/4, so meh. There arent any real race tracks around here that I know of other than drag strips. I'm in west Florida. I also have a convertible, so that disallows me to even run at certain tracks.

Totally worth it.. its a different car after all the boltons + tune. And yes, the hp is more expensive per $ on the M3.. But that's the name of the game with no FI on an NA high revving V8.

A tune will always make a noticeable difference, but not wow you like a supercharger. The price for hp is higher on a BMW vs a Chevy/Ford.
What part of West Florida are you in? We are in Central Florida and having an E92 M3 come in for a VF Supercharger install if your not too far and want to see it in person. |

Without a supercharger minimum, you will never regain the feeling of the Camaro.

If I were you I wouldnt bother with performance, get a good exhaust, enjoy the beautiful sound of the s65, and look at the bright side, youll get used to less power and when you change cars to something faster you'll appreciate it more.

I totally see why you wouldnt want to spend 10-14k for a vortech supercharger kit for these cars. Can anyone tell my why they are so much more expensive for M3's I have had several Vortechs starting with the old original A-Trim back in the 90's to the T and Y-Trim's and with an air to air cooler along with the mondo bypass and discharge tube. The Y-trim and discharge tube, FMU, injectors Fuel pumps and lines cost me less than half the cost of an M3 intercooled kit. I am seriously thinking about an M3 but I can not see spending 14k for the VF625 kit. What is so different with it?

I think it's just brand premium.. A maserati supercharger is about 35,000. It may also have to do with how hard it is to get into an ECU on a car like this

I'm surprised no one mentioned this but you are way off on your costs. It will cost MUCH more than $1600 for tune, xpipe, pulley, and drop in filter. To give you an idea tunes are on average $1k and xpipes $1500-2000. Look into ess supercharged their entry level is 535hp and it only costs $8k. Best bang for buck if you ask me. Eas just showed a dyno of a 535 equipped e90 m3 pushing 480whp. Damn impressive for the price

seriously.. forget engine modding this car. I'll buy a set of wheels, do the exterior a bit and leave the engine alone. I'd be better off taking my exhaust + general bolt on money and buying another car

Kidding aside, I traded a supercharged mustang for my M3 and I'm in the same boat. I also had a Camaro Z28 with LS1 a long time back. I don't know if I would be able to go back to a pony car, but it was certainly a lot cheaper to mod, bolt-ons and blowers. My M3 is still stock now for this reason. I'm thinking of keeping mostly that way, maybe with minor stuff like exhaust. Otherwise it's a well balanced package, ZCP wheels are perfect, suspension I won't touch, and in general I don't want to screw it up. BTW just learned about the Borla ATAK for the M3. Sounds great and relatively inexpensive compared to other M3 mufflers and I'm thinking of starting with that before going down the path of x-pipe/tune/etc. |

You can def get an x pipe, filter and pulleys for under 2K if you buy used.
A filter new is only $100 Pulleys are $300 An x pipe used should run ~1000 +/- for the most part. Someone was selling an MXP quad resonated catless yesterday for $600. Right there is only 1K...not bad for 35-40 crank hp. Certainly is the most bang for your buck youre going to get with this car. Yes a supercharger gives you 120 hp, but for 8K...plus Ive never been a proponent of putting FI on a car that didnt already come with it from the factory. So yea, you can get that type of power for that amount of money. Its not the easiest task but certainly doable. |

I dont think youll be satisfied with the car by any means if you had a 650rwhp camaro and like power. Its a quick car but never "feels" as fast as it really is (the beautiy of it) because of the linear torque and hp curve. Even with a supercharger my car never felt that fast, but yet I was able to beat 650awhp GTR's.
In regards to bolt ons - I was full catless exhaust, intake, tune, pullies and able to pull about 5 cars on a stock M3. The best abng yoru your buck is a primary cat delete and tune. Youll get about 30whp from that. |

Alright. Here, I think the best question I could ask is this: I have a 2008 Convertible M3. Stock I think it runs a 13.00 or 13.50, atleast that's what I saw on dragtimes.
Where would these mods get me? Pulley, xpipe, tune, drop in filter. I know it's weird drag racing an M3 rather than taking it to a real track, but there just arent any here. Unless someone knows of a track in Florida that isnt just an oval. I'm thinking of instead, just buying a nice exhaust system. OEM mod sounds good, doesnt drone, and its cheap. I'm so used to driving a loud american car, I was looking at Kreissieg exhausts before I realized it would drive me crazy Last edited by Invadermoose; 09-28-2012 at 09:53 AM.. |
