Akra Evo Drone?
Installed the Akrapovic Evolution exhaust. I heard this system has little to no drone. Yet at 2k and at 3k RPMs I am getting seriously hardcore brain humming drone. any ideas?
The video doesn't really capture how much the drone dominates the cabin but you can kind of hear the difference. you can even hear where the drone disappears once the revs drop below 2800ish Last edited by dadealus; 10-25-2012 at 09:57 PM.. |

The Akrapovic Evolution is one of the mildest full systems made for the E9X M3. Sound levels are a subjective thing so you may be a person who has a sensitive ear to volume. You may have to go back to the stock system because I doubt that you are going to find a quieter full system.

yeaa, if you think the evo has bad drone.. then I dunno what to say. It's for sure one of the more mild systems– maybe just an axel back is the route for you.

Either you're way to sensitive or something is wrong with the install. It's not loud at all inside the cabin. It's pretty loud outside when the engine is cold.
Try a race exhaust and then you'll see what drone is.

I'd suggest attempting to find another M3 in VA equipped with same setup and a ride in the passenger seat. If you do not hear the same level of drone, you will know the issue is specific to your system\install.

Dumb question, but are you sure you got the Akra Evolution system and not the Akra GT4?

I would call myself sensitive to drone and I have not considered Akra Evo to be "droney". It's not stock quiet and I can't hear any drone in your video. As others have said it's subjective and you should try and find another car with the same system to determine if yours is out of the ordinary. Best of luck.

Could this be that you're breaking in both the car and exhaust at same time? I would expect the exhaust to get louder even as you break it in.

^That's definitely the Evo. Like others have said, you must be sensitive to sound as the Akra is the least droning, full exhaust system that you can buy.

I am assuming you bought this exhaust used? didnt read your entire post but this bothered me ( THE COUPLING THAT IS HOLDING THE EXHAUST IS NOT THE ONE THAT CAME WITH IT. ) maybe im just being picky... anyways. AKRA has the least drone of all exhaust. and if thats loud for you stock is the only way ... but anyways good luck. i Had installed my Akra for 2 years now and barely just broke it in... for the last 2 months, it had increased at least 20% in noise... i am currently running a slip on but had a not cat non res pipe before and that was crazy.... just wasnt drivable... well for me anyways. I also had the 200cat and a resonator and that was perfect.. which is the EVO version...

It's probably the clamps but find another car and go for a ride.

It's the only non-stock piece he has on the system if it's installed right.
What's your brilliant conclusion?

My guess is that the OP is sensitive to the frequency, like I am. For me, even the stock exhaust drones a bit at those RPMs. I can tolerate very few exhaust systems

Evo system drones for sure. You can also be happy with the slip on exhaust !

I have the Akra slip but its coupled with a catless x-pipe. It has a "bassy drone" (not sure if it's drone or just base) also but at different RPM's...below 1,500 and also between 2,000 and 2,500. My base/drone is louder than yours and I'm also sensitive to the loud exhast noize but I like the extra power it provides so I just find myself up-shifting at around 4,000 RPM (at least ) so no bassy drone!!
