Brake Service Options

Hi All,

Just had a 50,000km service and the mechanic said I need new pads and rotors. Car has never been track and is only intended for street use.

What options do I have in terms of rotors and pads. I wanted to purchase a brake service kit (sensors/pads/rotors) from ECS but shipping would be a killer so thought I would ask before I do anything like that.

Like the look of drilled/slotted rotors e.g ECS 2 piece or stoptech.

How long do stock rotors last for and can they be machined?

I can see why you would need new pads at 50,000kms but can't see why you would also need new rotors.

The rotors are designed to last the life of 2 sets of OEM pads. I had the pads on mine changed around 60,000kms but definitely did not need the rotors changed.

If you're not planning on tracking the car and it's just for looks then some slotted/drilled rotors look nice. ECS and R1 concepts make some good OEM replacements. But yeah, you shouldn't "need" to replace your rotors for at least another 50,000kms.

As for pads, if you're just streeting the car I would recommend Cool Carbons. No noise, great linear brake torque feel and almost no dust. Not great for the track though.

I just bought new ECS 2pice Rotor from Stu @ BMRautowerks yesterday. If he still has any left you may save couple hundred dollars on a Pair of Rotor and pads VS buying from ECS themselves

BMR has the rotor on special @ $599 AUD (thats if he has any left)
ECS tunning @ $499 US + money conversion and Freight @ $190

BMR Hawk Pads street looking between $130-$160
ECS Tunning @ $154.70 + money conversion + Frights

Mine are just hitting the minimum thickness at 95kkms and I'm halfway through my third set of pads.

I have R1 Concepts X-Drilled & Slotted front and rear on my 335i paired with OE brake pads. Dare I say the rotor quality is just as good as the ECS 1 piece and I am pretty happy with it.
If I had a 2nd chance, I would most likely sacrifice the initial bite on the OE pads and go with Hawk HPS / Cool Carbon that doesn't dust like crazy!

That is awesome to hear good reviews about R1 Concept X-drilled & slotted as I ordered mine this morning with Posi Quiet pads. I wonder how well thos pads work.

under $450 shipped?! Both front and rears? Which series did you ordered? The Eline or Premium/Premier?

Just the Rears with pads

No that sound about right, and I think its not a bad deal. All you need now is the brake pad wear sensors.

Cut the sensor off, wire them together. They never wear out!

Thanks for all the feedback guys! I think I will just change the brake pads (Front and Rear) this time around then because I also thought changing rotors out at 50,000km was a bit too early. Is all I need is pads and new sensors for a brake change front and rear?

You only need new brake pad sensors if the old ones tripped. They're one use only.

Some people just cut the wires and connect them together though. If you visually inspect your pads every now and then you don't need pad sensors.
