AWESOME!
Yes the internals of the N55 have changed several times over the course of time on the E-series. Pistons were revised several times, DME once or twice, fuel pump once. F-chassis saw revised forged crankshafts in the M135i. M235i also saw the revised forged crankshafts as well as revised pistons and 4" downpipes over the 3.5" which the M135i had initially (they now have the 4" as well) Can't wait to hear more about this. Hopefully it's a balls to the wall baby-M car. Dry sump wont be necessary on a vehicle which uses street tyres generating ~1g while cornering. It's when you start going beyond that where you can deprive critical components lubrication. Cooling shouldn't be an issue if the engine sees an updated auxiliary radiator (M235i doesn't have one) and/or oil cooler. Could also bring combustion temperatures down by tuning the engines AFR in a manner where it provides adequate cooling from the start.

good to hear it's not going to be a 4cyl in some ways, though a bit poo it's not going to be particularly special motor wise
maybe similar to the 1M, where it's all the M3 goodies bolted on, minus motor? Was a winning formula before, so why not again? if 1300kg is true (loads of carbon to get to that!), even at 370bhp, it's going to scare an M3. |

Great news, if it's anything like the renders i've seen i want one.
I wonder if BMW will price them similar to the 1M, not being a limited run may help keep the price reasonable. |

I think a detuned S55 would have been perfect but very wishful thinking. The n55 will still be a decent motor and more reliable than the n54 though. Over the next 2 years hopefully aftermarket turbos are more readily available and proven to make big power.
I think 1M owners might not be so quick to jump on board, especially if they've modded their cars well (FBO + turbos). But for someone like me that's had the 135i for 5+ years it will be a nice daily driver to upgrade to. The 1M didn't make sense for me to upgrade at the time given the similarities and my mods. The M2 will be a whole new car. 1300kg won't happen but I hope it's close to that. I'm thinking 1380-1450kg. |

Looks like they are using the same formula as the 1M with the F87 designation. Ie the current M3/M4 chassis with the 2 series body. I was really hoping for a s48, but that would have created some marketing issue for the M2.

Last session was cancelled because of new QR rules. Next one in July at Morgan Park.

As Ian/Syd kindly commented, horsepower is the least relevant characteristic for vehicle performance. Those internet clowns might want to read around why serious drivers (eg radiantm3/USA) dumped the E92 supercharger How is your project (tyres, setup) going? |

While I would much prefer an ///M motor (detuned S55), in the end I don't know if it will really matter or make too much difference (or if I'd care), as long as ///M waves their magic wand over the N55. Whatever motor is used, it needs to have suitable cooling across the board, i.e. intercooler, oil cooler, radiator, trans cooling (AT/DCT) and brake ducting. I think the ultimate car (///M, RS, AMG/Black, etc) for any manufacturer serious about, or which has their tentacles in, motorsport needs to be, or provide the factory options to be, track-ready. Otherwise, why bother I think the most important factor is power to weight - more specifically, as low a weight as possible. It's difficult to obtain weight savings and easy to increase power, so I'd always prefer the factory to focus on weight savings. There have been posts comparing the BMW 1M/135i/M2/235i (4-seater) and a Cayman (2-seater) - to me these are two completely different cars - but at least the Cayman just goes to show what is possible in regard to power-to-weight (and weight specifically). Cayman S 1350kg (2975lbs), Cayman R 1295kg (2855lbs) - just goes to show that sub-3000lbs is possible - both around 240kw/320hp. 5.3-5.6kg/kw. Compared to the 235i - 1470kg (3240lbs) & 240kw, 6.125kg/kw. These weights are just off carsales research. I haven't kept up with the published weight figures and what it includes and doesn't include. I wouldn't read too much into factory-published power figures, 0-100kph times, etc - for either manufacturer. btw, P-car also has PDK, Sports Chrono and other mechanisms that reduce the 0-100kph and 1/4 mi times even further. As a comparison, a "big" 911 S (294kw) is about the same weight as a M235i, while a GT3 & RS is 1370-1395kg and the 996 GT3 Clubsport is 1250kg. There is also talk of a 300kw Cayman GT4 - now, that would be a car to own! OT: wheels & tyres research and testing is taking quite some time - many test fitments done and measurements taken - but I should have an update for my thread within a week. |

Here's another thread to whet your appetite...
BMW Vision GT race car (for Gran Turismo 6 on Sony PS3) - hints at M2 styling Make this the M2... without any changes! Alas, it will be a toned down version Obviously power and weight will be less on the production model but the body & aero is perfect (even the side-exit exhaust!). Although, it's quite possible that this won't be the M2 but a CSL version instead. Scott doesn't specifically mention the "standard" M2. |
