  • tire width and sidewall ratio are OEM spec for staggered 22" setup, thus no adverse affect on transfer case
  • while OEM tires are speed rated "Y", yours are rated "W" which just means you shouldn't go faster than 168mph. ask them how exactly does going 18mph less for top speed affect the transfer case?
  • IIRC there are BMW "star" Pirelli P Zero tires but educate them than "star" tires ARE NOT REQUIRED; they're just highly recommended to maximize the performance of the matched vehicle

I just don’t get this game. I mean I don’t know how many all wheel drive cars I’ve had and when tires are worn I’ve never had shudders etc. BMW just needs to own this bs and move on.

I was able to get the transfer case fluid replaced under warranty at a different dealership!

Can you post the dealer that took care of you? I'm up in Hagerstown but use a dealer in PA, Sun Motors. So far, they have been great but I paid to have my TC fluid changed at 35K miles.

If I remember correctly you weren't experiencing any symptoms of having the issue. If a vehicle is, then the TC fluid will be changed under the new vehicle warranty as part of the diagnosis.

Northeasterns, are we doing donuts and cooking our transfercases during this blizzard today?

Received my report back from Blackstone today for my Transfer Case oil. Iron and Copper are elevated, though, as indicated by Blackstone, may be due to this being the original fill, aka "Break In Fluid".

2021 M50i, 34,378 miles on the TC oil. First change as far as I know. No symptoms, just had it done as a precautionary measure. I was surprised how dark the fluid was.

The link below posted in Reddit recently was a surprise to me. The Maintenance Manual attached (that APPEARS to be genuine) indicates that BMW is now specifying that for M60i versions, the transfer case fluid should be changed initially at 20,000 miles and again at 50,000 miles. (I’m not clear if it’s every 30k miles thereafter.) Is this the significant advancement in BMW policy that I think it is?

Yes, I posted the updated maintenance guide the other day. As you noted, it is not clear as to what the interval actually is. They say it should be changed every 20k miles but also every 50k miles. We have heard that Ultimate Care has not been updated to include it so it would be on the owner's dime at this point.

When I took my M60i in to the dealer for the brake recall at 16000 miles last November, they voluntarily changed both my motor and transfer case oil.

I'm thinking even though I'm now in a 40i variant I am going to abide by the same 20k/50k intervals for TC service.

though it’ll likely be out-of-pocket since that model isn’t included in the maintenance schedule

I have used Blackstone’s Lab exclusively in the past and even within the last few months, but they appear to be getting a bad rap for not being fully forthcoming and using pretty much a regular explanation. I have personally witnessed it amongst three cars of my own over the last few months. Point? I just don’t know if I can trust them anymore.

It's interesting that it only lists the transfer case. What about the front and rear differentials? They seem equally problematic.

Baby steps? No class action lawsuit filed on those YET?

Was watching the traction control light flicker while driving today and was saying prayers for my transfer case :(

Picked up some Ravenol DTF-1 I'll be filling at my next oil change interval

If we thought that the transfer case was bad on normal pavement, we’re going to get a reality check how it preforms in snow haha

Love BMW, but they gotta recall these transfer cases as the TC maintenance is not defined in their own maintenance publications.

Is the same transfer case used in the G45 X3? Hopefully the correct fluid is in them when they leave the assembly plant.

The G45 X3 is subject to the same issue. The wrong fluid was never used in them. What the wording in the SIB means is that the fluid has broken down.

DTF-1
Old fluid = part #83222409710
New fluid = #83225A4F016

If I were to start feeling the mentioned shuddering when turning slow etc from transfer case/diff is it too late at that point? Or would a fluid change fix the issue if done immediatly?
