DIY oil pump

Hello
I have started to get oil pump issues and have started researching the job. As some may know, some B58 engines were given an oil pump with a plastic part that fails. I have one unfortunately.
I realize the subframe has to be dropped to access the engine and it’s a big job. I am a generator tech (not portable stuff, residential to heavy diesel). I have access to a shop.
Does anyone have experience with this?
I want to get the BMW shop manual, where could I get it? Does INSTA contain it?
Any advice is welcome.

I did my oil pump. Its definitely a big job. I have a lift, which makes the job easier for sure. All pretty straightforward from the BMW instructions. Just be very careful and precise in the sealant application for the oil pan. Definitely don't want excess sealant to clog any important passages on the engine.

How did it go?

This is something I want to do on my wife's X5, she has just over 50k miles but as of yet has no symptoms of a problem, but I plan to replace it with the revised unit.

Unfortunately ALL the oil pumps in the 2019 had the internal plastic adjusting ring. They didn't switch back to all metal until 2020.

I hate plastic with a burning passion. I just got finished with my youngest daughters X3 where her plastic Oil Filter housing failed leaving her stranded. She has right at 70,075k miles on her car. I should have replaced the plastic fantastic oil filter housing with aluminum one before it cracked and just bled out, what can I say, live and learn.

The thermoplastic doesn't do well after enough heat cycles, it breaks or cracks leading to erratic oil pressure regulation, sudden oil pressure loss and potential catastrophic engine failure. One early warning sign is the cars inability to measure it's oil level. Usually cutting off around 20%.

BMW quietly started replacing failed oil pumps with an all metal updated pump, and frankly I don't want to wait for it to fail. There's a non-zero chance it fails catastrophically. Although the more common outcome is you get some warning.

The job looks fairly straightforward, but I was wondering how you're went.

Its been a couple years, but job is fairly straightforward. Just a lot of steps and a lot to do. Wouldn't attempt the job without a lift.

I've done the job with jackstands on the floor of my garage. It can be done.

Get ISTA for work instructions and torque specs for reference. You won't be able to follow the factory instructions verbatim, but you won't need to since you won't have or need all the specialty tools.

I can share parts list of all the parts and tools you'll need if you want.
