Yeah they look fine, as far as I can see….I tried putting some hot glue on the back side as well but didn’t help. It needs quite a bit force on the side to stop it from making the noise. You can hear the frequency changing a bit depending on how much force it used
I would try to get it reflowed or re-soldered first to make sure there isn't a cold solder joint before attempting to completely replace the part.

Ok…do you think that could be an issue with the manufacturing process of the board? I ask because I have a replacement unit (complete HVAC control assembly) and has the same high pitch frequency. That’s why I was leaning more towards a “bad” or cheap part that is being used.
Thanks

Well, if reflowing fixes the issue, then that would mean a poor soldering job during manufacturing.

Also, I just chatted with my electrical engineer buddy, he confirmed that reflowing is a good and easy start, but this could also be a normal circuit operation. He suggested gluing some weight (lead?) to it that could help attenuate the noise.

Ok thanks and appreciate the feedback! I’ll try the reflowing route and see how that works.

Well back to the drawing board…..had the chip reflowed yesterday and just got done testing it out. Noise is still there

Does anyone have any update on this issue? Just acquired a 2019 X5 G05 with the same problem and wondering if there's anything I can do to resolve! Thanks

Hi everyone,

Test drove a 2019 X5 M50i today and upon entering I immediately noticed the sound, later could isolate the source as the AC display (color version).

Very glad I found this thread here (or not, because it seems to be a general problem).

Any update from anyone? Did you try replacing with a newer part, now it‘s 2024 and maybe the supplier fixed this?

Best, Fabian

No updates on my end….found the source but haven’t been able to stop the whine. I am going to, in the next few weeks, pull the chip and attach leads to it removing it from the board. I’ll see if that helps any. I’ve tried a lot of simpler solutions like putting hot glue on it, silicone, putting a bunch of dense foam in front of it but still permeates through. I had it reflowed but nothing.

Thanks for getting back with an update. It‘s still mesmerizing to me how something like that can a) pass quality control in the first place and b) that BMW does not manage to fix the root cause by updating the design or component on this board.

Let us know if you find a cure. I will be driving another X5 - same year - on the weekend and report back if I can hear it to the same level there.

So after driving another 2019 X5: the hissing noise was there, but much less loud than in the first car. I could only hear it when having my ear close to the AC display. Would not have bothered me here.

Therefore I think there are varying degrees of boards out there.

This is actually happening to my G16 M850 now after having an air vent clip break while in for service and BMW replaced with a new unit. The new unit makes a high pitched whine as described here - I downloaded a sound analyzer app and its a 12k HZ whine that bothers me unless the radio is on to drown it out.

Have people been able to get this part replaced or fixed?

Those are all light materials. Have you tried gluing a heavy piece of metal to it, like steel or lead? That should attenuate the noise.

Sorry for the delayed response. Regarding a replacement unit, I have had replacement unit and it was just a different intensity of the noise. I was in a loaner another time and same thing but just quieter.

As far as adding something heavy, I didn’t try that but not sure if that would help. It took a large amount of pressure using my finger on the side of the chip to stop the noise. To the point where the pressure was excessive for that chip. I was just try to insulate the noise with the other material but since it still permeates through.

To date, I’ve just left it alone as I got tired of constantly messing with it. I think if that chip can get replaced with a different that may help, but I was never able to find what the chip number is or some other identifier that I could find online.

Anyone found a resolution to this yet?

Just picked up a 23 X5 M50i and this noise is driving me insane. Has anyone found a solution for it? All these hvac control units look the same across BMW, makes me wonder if you can swap to another. M340i doesn't have this issue but is not a colored display.

Super bummed.....replacing my 3 series due to back pain but I'd rather be in pain than listen to this.

Just to update for anyone looking into this.....Had the dealer look and confirmed the noise.

They replaced the whole climate control panel w/ "64-11-5-A1D-414" , initially the sound was gone but after a day it came back. It is a lot more mild and livable now though....

So replacing with newest part will not solve the issue completely and in time who knows mine might get worse.

I see a lot of you are still dealing with this. I was in the exact same situation and was convinced the high pitch noise was coming from the front climate control area, just like many of you mentioned.

What actually fixed it for me had nothing to do with the climate system. It ended up being the exterior windshield panels. I had posted about them earlier. Once those were addressed, the noise was completely gone.

I even had the shop foreman ride with me so I could replicate the sound. I made it clear I was not taking the vehicle back until we figured it out and resolved it. Once they corrected the windshield panel issue, the problem was fully fixed.

The fix:
They replaced all of the plastic windshield trim on the sides and a few other areas.

I wish it really was that easy in my experience but the sounds literally goes away when the AC control panel was disconnected....not to mention its present with car off and not moving.

I think these are 2 separate issues.

Anyone have further luck with this? I just picked up a '23 M50i and the noise is there and quite annoying.

This is NOT anything to do with windshield trim, the high pitched noise is there at all times.

I am also experiencing this issue in my 2021 X5. It drives me completely insane. It's impossible to drive the car for long periods without listening to music!
The noise is there stationary or not, as long as the car is powered on.

Has anyone achieved any kind of fix? The BMW dealer just said it's normal....
